Hey guys just picked up a polytech m305 with a sage ebr stock what are the first upgrades a guy should be looking in to doing to improve the firearm?

I think you folks mean the spring guide.

Though how much that improves..eh..

First thing to do is look up the magwell and make sure you don't have a MIM bolt

if the bolt is fine, and you haven't shot it, how would anyone know what needs improvement. if it shoots 1moa why would you improve anything.

Isn't a Polytech just a re-badged Norinco, both M305, right?
If that is the case, and yours Daynerama is original condition from the Norc factory,... well, a Norc is a Norc is a Norc, and can almost always benefit from some fine tuning. So, IF Barney (Tactical Teacher) ever swings out your way on a road trip, you should jump on the chance to attend one of his M14 clinics. You'll learn a lot more about your rifle, and possibly get it running in better shape than when it was new, (as from the Chinese high school machine shop class that built it, as Barney would say). ;)
Cheers.

If the bolt isn’t cast..... buy a replacement spring and a crate of ammo and shoot it.

The guide-rod and spring is good value for the dollar. The rod is not “needed” ASAP, but that spring is.... I think Norinco has decided that a 50/50 ratio of spring steel/cottage cheese is a good combo. The recoil springs are garbage on the factory chi-com rifles...
