Pool 1 moose hunters for ON WMU 21A?

Our old hunting grounds in WMU 13 has been reduced in tag numbers so no guaranteed group size. Some of our group are giving up on applying. Two of us are planning to try in WMU 21A. We need to have 4 pool 1 hunters for a tag, so need 2 more. Haven't settled on a location yet. Send me a PM if interested or have thoughts.

I know at least three gangs that used to go moose hunting in 15B every year, this was when the GGS was 4 for bull.
Each group consisted of 6 or more guys and every year they would have to beg people to join them in their group to meet the GGS.
Each and every year they would bump into new hunters in the area who appllied as individuals and in some cases had two bull tags in a group of three!

Perhaps you guys should consider applying as individuals, no guarantee you'll get a tag but the situation this year for tags is quite desperate regardless.
 
It is ALWAYS more beneficial to apply as a group UNLESS you hope to get more than one tag (unlikely, but it does happen)... if your group does not meet the GGS then you are automatically entered in the individual draw... I can't believe how many people still don't understand this system.

The benefits of group application are that you will only receive one tag and will have the maximum number of pool one applicants for next years draw.

So, OP... if you go to 21A with two guys, you should still apply as a group.

So if the GGS is for example 4 but you can only muster 3 guys do your chances of drawing an individual tag not increase?

Totally agree. In the long term, group application is the way to go. In a previous post you mentioned the benefits of a points system, that makes absolute sense which would on it's own make it highly unlikely that the MNR would ever adopt it.

No...

The draw consists of three stages... the first stage is the GGS stage... all groups that have the minimum number required (or more) are allocated a tag and all members are removed from the draw process... the second stage (large group allocation) is a recalculation of the ratio between remaining tags and remaining applicants... a new minimum GGS is determined and all groups meeting the new minimum size are allocated a tag and all group members are removed from the draw... the third and final stage is the individual allocation... this includes all hunters who applied as an individual and all hunters who applied in unsuccessful groups... the remaining tags are allocated randomly by computer for this remaining group...

So all Ontario moose hunters should apply as a group (if they hunt in a group)... "unless" they are hoping to procure multiple tags... the odds are strongly against this, but as the individual draw is random, it does happen. I know one hunter who received a coveted bull tag in WMU 38 every second year (pool one years)... for twelve years! I know others who have applied to the same unit for 20+ years and have never received a tag... this is why I and others advocate the "point system" for tag allocation... with the point system, when it is your turn, you get a tag.
