I have this new savage 22/250 round top action mod 16, just putting a box of white box winchester through it to break it in and the first 20 rounds went through no probs. but it started to drop empty shells in the action so i cleaned it and the problem still persisted it will pull the case out of the chamber but drops them in the magazine.don't want to send it back coyote season is coming up and that would take months bin there before. slipp

"...but drops them...cleaned it..." You clean the bolt too? The ejector obviously isn't working. It may have a bit of crud in its hole(most likely), a burr(not likely) or the spring may be defective(not likely either). Take it out(there's a wee retaining pin. Don't lose the pin or spring) and look.
There's a .pdf manual on Savage's site.

I have 2 Savage .223's that do the same thing.

Is yours the bronze colored extractor?

Apparently if you call Savage they will send you a new extractor.

Extraction problems?

.
You state that the rifle will extract the cartridge from the chamber, but drops it into the magazine, right?

If it fails to "kick" the empty case clear of the action after the bolt comes back, then it is an ejection problem.

If you look at the bolt face, there is a small "pin" that should be out quite prominently. If you push this pin, it is spring loaded, and should pop back out after you push it downward....back in the bolt.

If this pin is flush with the face of the bolt, it is either a weak or broken spring, or a burr or piece of crud keeping it down.

If you have a good gunsmith in your area, he can replace the spring in about 5 minutes if he has one. I do not know what is up with the Savage ejection springs, but I have replaced 4 in the last year that were WEAK. Perhaps they got a bad batch of heat treated ones.

Another way to check is take an EMPTY case and slip the rim behind the extractor. It should be at an angle to the bolt. By pushing the case toward the bolt, you should feel a good bit of resistance.

thanks guys I took all the suggestions went through all them all and checked out some others found that the extractor didn't contact the rim enough and there was a sharp edge on the bolt raceway that upon extraction knocked the empty shell out of the bolt face.my mistake its an ejection problem

well after replacing the extractor she works like a dream ordered the extractor from savage shooters and was hear in a week good people to deal with thanks Lisa slipp

Good going

Nice to hear that you found the problem once pointed in the right direction. It is frustrating that something so small can cause a major problem.

Another satisfied customer of the GunNutz team!
