Anyone know if porcupine is OK to shoot with a small game license?

I looked, but couldn't find them on any protect or endangered list....or OK to shoot list, either.

Thanks guys..

Oh dear lord! I thought this thread died!!:runaway: !! Ah well, it was amusing last time, will be again, might even get some people slagging each other again:D .

Other Animals
Porcupine, rabbit, hare, skunk, raccoon and woodchuck may be hunted, but not trapped*, without a licence throughout the province, at all times of the year.

from Alberta guide

I don't know much on porcupines so could someone tell me why they are hell on wood?

They are voracious wood eaters. When they attack a tree they strip the bark at the bottom and kill the tree.

OK. I read that whole other thread 'cause I was bored. Geez thanks. :D

We knocked a male and a pregnant female that were 30 feet up out of a cedar in our south woodlot. Noticed the weird poop on the ground, looked up......Hey!!!!!

Landlord (a farmer) says they aren't good for trees.

Bang! ..........Thump.

Bang! .....................Thump.

Nothing but a steaming pile of guts and fetuses.

Ewwwww.

We used 'em to bait the wolves.......no porc pie for me!

Why Waste a bullet?
I find that a 3" dia. log does wonderful things to a porcupine when hit across the bridge of the nose.

If anything else you can shoo the buggers away from your lower rad hose with a good pointy stick........

Its not hunting
Its self defence bro!

You went through that WHOLE thread? owell im sure you learned that theres no laws against it, and learned alot of stories.

As for the post on saving bullets and hitting the porcupine with 3" diameter piece of wood.

I will be holding a clubbing clinic next tuesday at the rec centre.

$5 dolars at the door, bring your own club, please no cameras.

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D

They can be tricky to shoot in a tree. I found one nestled in the crotch of a tree and the only clear shot I was directly underneath the bugger. I didn't want to launch a load of buckshot straight up into the air so chose #4 birdshot.

As I was squeezing the trigger it dawned on my that when I shot it would fall directly into my face. So I shot, backpeddled rapidly 6 feet or so and he landed with a thud right where I was standing. I drilled him with a load of #4 buck as a shower of quills fell down around me. I was finding quills in those clothes for days afterwards.

Yes....I did notice quills still floating down after about 3 minutes. They came down alot slower and softer than the Porcs.

I'll never forget that THUMP.

BTW....how'm I supposed to club 'em out of a tree????
