For those of you that must pack up your steel after practice here is a simple tripod and target. We use them with for all the cowboy action matches but I have sold many elsewhere. If you have a person handy with a welder and a plasma cutter you can make up anything.
Advantages: Pack up many in a trunk
If target is damaged can be easily removed and replaced
You can change targets easily while using a few stands
The angle the target sits at deflects fragments downward
Suggestions: If you plan on making up for IPSC or IDPA use ar400 steel for targets. It is about 3 times the price of mild steel but those nasty 38 supers don't leave a mark.
How to do it.
-Cut 3 lengths of 5/8 rod (suggest 2 at 42" and one at 48" for starters)
- Weld three links of chain as pictured to rod. (the third rod is longer as your target post, the link on the long rod goes sideways, the other two lengthwise along the end of the rod)
- Cut whatever target you like circle, 6"square, A zone, playing cards
- Weld two piecs of 1/4 thick by 1" flat bar with 1/4" hole drilled through (make sure the hole is far enough from the plate so the 1"square tube will not bind. you may have to round the bottom edge of the 1"square tube to avoid binding)
- Cut a 6" length of 1" square tubing and drill corresponding 1/4" hole for bolt as pictured
Options:
Depending on the size of target a good load can make the target spin if hit on the edge. To avoid the spinning drill a 3/8" hole in the top of the 1"square tubing and weld a nut on to allow for a bolt to cinch down on the rod.
Cautions:
Don't go cheap and use rebar for the rod. The ridges tend to cause spit back.
As usual, because it is a steel target I cannot accept any responsibility for usse or misuse of these targets.
If you want to see larger images go to Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol site and check out one of the match results, there are pictures under each set of results. (I still haven't quite figured out pictures on here)
I am going to post some other targets and a foot release design for IPSC/IDPA
This is not my range, the horse trailer is not a back stop, this is just a picture outside my shop for this forum.
If anyone has a picture or a plan for a clamshell target I am searching everywhere. I want to make up a few for our club.
