I've seen pictures of ported barrels on O/U shotguns. I was wondering if it does anything other than cause deafness :D in your shooting buddies?

THEY CAN BE LOUD!. Seriously some clubs dont allow them on trap as it is annoying to other shooters on the line. However they are said to be ported to reduce muzzle jump which can help if shooting a second target. With target loads I dont think thats a problem, but some guys swear by them. I've shot both and I cant tell the difference.

There has been an ongoing debate as to the effectivness of ported barrels. I have shot both ported and non-ported barrels of the same length on the same gun and could not tell the difference. They are loud and are buggers to clean! Many barrel ports, if you examine closely, are not even angled properly into the barrel to be able to do what the advertisements preport. Personally I believe that the development of ported barrels was just a way for gunmakers to market more product.
IMHO
Cheers, John

I tend to agree. Most ports don't do anything except make more noise.

I agree...I hunted for years with a ported 835 ulti-mag and switched guns...no difference except the volume....

I have to disagree with the most of you. I have a ported 525 sporting now and had a win select engry that was ported and do notice a differencewith the ports. My old skeet gun was a Berreta 686 that I had shortened to 26" that only weighed 5 1/2 to 6 lbs and after a weekend of sporting clays and like 600 rounds my right cheek would be so sore that I couldn't touch it. I sent those barrels out to Magna Port in Manitoba and it made that gun totally different to shoot. It was louder granted but also had way less muzzle rise on the shot. The breaks have a place but it is for the large volume shooter.
