I just purchased a Browning Silver Hunter and i am goin to put a long range patternmaster choke on it but i dont know what the difference is between a ported or unported choke. The performance will be the same i asume but is one better then the other. What is the difference??

Thanks everyone

Porting probably won't make much difference in felt recoil with a shotgun. It generally works best in firearms where the weight of the powder charge is a large percentage of the weight of the bullet, such as with magnum rifles.

I have both ported and non-ported chokes and have never noticed a difference in noise, recoil, or muzzle rise when switching back and forth. I do however, wear ear protection.

Tjhaile very interesting theory ????

John Ross, author of Unintended Consequences has a more detailed explanation here:

http://john-ross.net/recoil.php

Recoil results from the momentum from two masses being accelerated to some given velocity: that of the bullet and that of the powder. The greater the fraction of the total ejecta that is comprised of powder, the greater the potential gains from a muzzle brake.

Another thing to remember is if you are intending to use any Federal shotgun ammo with the flight-control wad, Federal recommends against using a ported choke. Apparently the flight-control wad is designed to stay with the shot column, & the ported choke stops the wad from doing this.
