Poser for you guys - 1000 yard rifle with a twist

Hi Norm
What is a VLD
I'm horrible with acronyms.

VLD... is Very low drag. They have Hi BC's for their calibre.

A Berger 140gr. 6.5mm VLD has around .65 BC a Berger 180gr VLD in 7mm has around .7BC.

These are high for their calibres and give the highest remaining velocity for their calibres at 1000 yds. All the better to win with.:)

Now, I still don't know what "Burns Lake rules Facory" ammo is... anyone know?

It seems to me from the documentation given the "Factory Class is just a weight class( 10.5lbs) with a .75" muzzle spec. with a no wildcat cartridge provision. You could build a dedicated rifle with dedicated ammo and basically have a major league advantage.

This ain't no factory rifle. I wouldn't want to come up against it in any match.

Anyone shooting a box stock factory rifle with stock factory ammo would be fodder of the mill:mad:

Sorry I misspoke

I said factory class when its Hunter class...

It is the junior class, and I thought the purpose might be "a shoot what you brung class". You had better bring something good, because in my opinion you could build a dedicated rifle for this class and be competitive in the higher classes.

Burns Lake 1000 YD Rifle Classes

There are 4 Classes

HUNTER CLASS
-Max 3/4" muzzle
-Max weight 10.5lbs with scope*
-Max scope setting 9 power
-Factory Hunting Ammunition Only
-This rifle can be used in all events.

SPORTING RIFLE CLASS
-Max 3/4" muzzle
-Max weight 10.5lbs with scope*
-Can use handloads
-Any scope.

HEAVY BARREL CLASS
-Max weight 17lbs with scope

UNLIMITED CLASS
-No restrictions
-Must be shot off sandbags.

Technically Yes. A Savage 12bvss in .308 will do what you want. You can buy "factory match ammo" Black Hills. You may get some discussion about barrel diameter but I measured mine and the tip of the champfered barrel end is .750". Accuracy is very good and this rifle has been used in 1000 yard matches. And the price is right and it comes with a reasonable trigger. Plus it can be used for hunting as well.

So, a muzzle that measures exactly 0.750" disqualifies the rifle?

Ted

Thanks Norm!

One more question. Hunter class used to be maximum of 6 power scope, did it not?

When did that change?

Ted

You are rightTed it is... but this is Burns Lake Hunter Class.

I have been shooting in that Burns Lake match for 20+ years. It is a hoot, and quite well attended. In the Hunter class, I have had unusually good success over the years, and the last 6 years have been shooting a Stock Factory Remington 700 Classic in 7mm Rem Mag. All That has been done to this rifle is a trigger adjustment and bedding. Of the 6 years using this rifle, I have won or placed 4 times. Groups generally run in the 8" area. My ammo of choice is Federal Premium 150 grain Ballistic Tip Factory Ammo. Last year I won with an 8" group. Some very fine groups are shot in other classes, some down into the 5" area. One gets to see some interesting firearms at that shoot. Regards, Eagleye.

What is the course of fire Eagleye?
5 shots, or 10?

Me LIKEY that course of fire!!:D
9X in the hunter is alsoo a great idea, as it gives everybody a heads up and a baseline to go by, even though I know a few fellas who hunt with fixed 10's, they could change if they wanted to shoot the hunter match.
House rules are house rules,
and if a guy don't like it, he don't hafta shoot, right?

There is also 1 shot at a 13" egg silhouette, from the bench with your heavy barrel rifle. The winner gets a free dinner.
The last event is a offhand shot at a 4' square steel gong. The winner gets a special prize

I have done the gong thing regularly in the past few years offhand on my 1K target.
The bull is 24", and the target is 4'X6'.
Sadly, for me B.C might as well be as far away as Cannought thesse days!:(
