Can you mount it a little forward of the cover on the receiver? I see a lot of flat area here.

Would mounting it closer to the barrel be a bad idea? I only ask cause I'm thinking a red dot may be the way to go.

Don't see why not. Just one suggestion: Find a way to fix it without drilling first and give several shots to ensure it will not catch ejected brass in proposed forward position.
