hi guys,

I have a Rem model 788. I figure the barrel is done. I've tried 2 or 3 scopes on it now, and even a laser bore sighter. starting at 25yrd they all hold zero, but as I go back to 100yrds, they all get the same results as well. the gun never prints the same pattern twice. I've had 3 or three of my friends, they all shoot, try and its all the same. I think the barrel may be shot out.
Would this be a good action to re-barrel and re stock? it's already got a bottom metal set up. How hard would it be to retain the bottom metal? or should I just call it done and leave it in the safe?

thanks in advance

Dave

No different than rebarreling any other rifle. I have an 788 rebarreled to .223 but it was made into a single shot and is in a Robertson prone stock. If you are staying with the same calibre or the same family of calibre ie .308/.243. or say a .222/.223 that use the same bolt face there isn't any reason you couldn't use the same bottom metal.

The 788 is a very strong receiver so if it is still in good shape then I would definitely rebarrel it. If you don't I am sure there would be interest in the action.

If you got this rifle used the first thing would be to spend a couple of weeks cleaning the snot out of the barrel, then make sure all screws are tight and the stock does not rub on the barrel somewhere, if after checking everything it still wont shoot then consider a new barrel, these are good actions.

I acquired one of these rifles a number of years ago that was supposedly "shot out"
It was chambered in 22-250, and was about a 4" rifle when I got it.
Former owner said he bought it new, and it used to shoot very well, but had gone sour of late.
I took a good look down the tube, and it was copper fouled very badly.
I spent several hours over the next 3 days, cleaning it out with Sweets [best I had at the time]
But I finally had my patches coming out white instead of bright blue.
Took it to the range with some 52 grain Sierras chased by IMR 4895...voila!! a ½ moa group for 5 @ 100.
I would thoroughly clean that puppy first then condemn it if it still will not shoot.
Regards, Eagleye.

thanks guys!
I bought the rifle about 17 years now. bought it off a guy in Halifax. it used to shoot great. but I haven't ran any copper solvent down the barrel and it gets cleaned out twice a year. once before hunting season and once after. guess I'm going to have to take a real good look at it later today.

what would be involved in doing a barrel swap? I know its not as easy as a (ick) savage and I'd like to turn in into a long(er) range gun. nothing more than 5-600 yards. I'd need a new stock and i'd like to keep the original 4 round straight feed mag.

I doubt that you are going to find any off the shelf barrels for this action so you would need a gunsmith to thread and chamber a barrel for you. About $400 for the barrel and another $250 for the smithing. It's the same procedure as the 700 but with a different thread.
