As a disclaimer, I know very little in the matter of milsurps and SKSs, just something I never gave time into.

At work, someone told me he purchased an SKS years ago but never had the courage to go through with the cosmoline removal.
I figure he would like around 180-200$ for it.

I asked him if I could loan it, give it a bit of surface cleaning to see the markings, and most probably buy it from him.
This is the info I seem to have gathered so far from the sticky and inspecting the rifle.

-1954 Tula
-does not have refurb marking on the dust cover
-Stock, bolt, carrier, trigger group, mag, barrelled action are all matching with solid engraved number
-Gas tube is electropenciled the matching number, something obviously done afterwards
-Hard wood stock, as in NOT laminate
-Mag was frankenpinned (the method of pinning which most of you guys refer as ugly pinning)

What I am wondering...
How to determine if it was previously issued or non issued...
Approximate value of rifle in both scenarios
I can take more specific pics if needed.

Thanks!

Give him the $200 take it and run. The price for pos ones at Cabellas is much more than that. I have a similar one with a laminate stock. From what I’ve seen the electropencil is used since the area is too small or thin for punched numbers. These are only going up as supplies dry up and the good ones are few and far between.

There's a guy in Winnipeg selling an all-matching UNREFURBISHED SKS ('54 Tula) for $275. Take it and run! I don't have the room, or it would be mine by now.

You have not mentioned if the extractor and gas piston s/n also match. The price would be around 300$.

I just paid $299 at lever arms in Vancouver for a #s matching non-refurbished 1954 Tula.
The thing was sooo clean after removing all the cosmoline. I doubt it had ever been fired since testing at the factory in 1954.

Same here
Am not new to firearms, and it looks practically unused.
Cosmoline is a b**** to get out though, for a safe item i doubt i will use much, sure is giving me trouble

8 years ago SKS was my first gun, a classic scenario like many Canadians.
This time around, no corrosive ammo, i had my share of cleaning.
Once cosmo is out, i will sight it in and take out once in a while.

Cosmoline is easy to clean out, mineral spirits are your friend.

Post pics when you have it. Oh and make sure you monitor your thread.

Used mineral spirits for the first time, did a heck of a job of cosmoline!
Then cleaned and fully oiled with G96.
And honestly, don't know why I bought it I realised I had sold milsurps at the time as I did not have the drive anymore to put up with them.
Dry fired it 2-3 clicks, the sights and trigger are not what I remembered, and think I will pass on using it.
Most likely this SKS will end up in the EE sooner than later.
