Possible to change improved cylinder chokes on a sxs shotgun.

Im intrested in buying Side by side 12 guage Stevens Model 5100, both barrels have ic bores. I was wondering if its possible to change on of these bores of mod or full. I knwo normal shotgun there are additions to change it, but being sxs are these still possible to use.

I'm surprised that a 5100 would have been made IC/IC.
I think that reaming and threading a barrel, and installing a choke tube would likely be $150 or so. Times two.
Might be possible to polish "jug chokes" into the barrels. The bores are enlarged for a few inches about an inch in from the muzzle.
The thickness of the barrels is the limiting factor in what modifications can be made.

usually it costs around $100 to tap a single barrel for chokes, then you need to buy chokes.
i have no idea what other considerations are involved in reaming/tapping a SxS, but even if we assume its as straightforward as tapping a single barrel youre looking at roughly $200 plus at least another $50-60 for a couple chokes.

correct me if im wrong, but isnt a Stevens 5100 a ~$250 gun?

you would be better off putting the money you would spend gunsmithing a $250 gun towards another gun that already has the features you are trying to add.

have you patterned the gun at all? what do you plan on using it for?

To be hoenst the biggest thing i will be useing the gun for is defence in the bush against the grizzlies. Moving out to grandfathers property out in a bush this summer. So mostly that and aybe a bit of foul hunting.
And on the stevens 1500 have both barrels IC, the man who owns it says they do. Im taking his word:p.

you basically want to test several different types of ammo, and see how it patterns out of your particular gun/choke.
butcher paper works, and is cheap/easy to find. you may find that different brands of ammo pattern completely differently in your gun.
knowing how your ammo patterns out of your gun is quite important.

with slugs, youll want to see where your POI is - so same type of deal. you want to know if theyre hitting high/low, left/right etc at various distances.
