My brother wants a s&w 500 revolver, was just cruising EE for one. to give it, I know it's possible if the other person is involved, but is it possible to send through mail or put under an Xmas tree and have someone actually surprised? I guess I could if I buy it and put it under my name first and exchange it in my house.

Put it in your name, and then transfer it to his. Just wrap it up, keep it in a safe and put it under the tree last minute.
I've always figured also if somebody has a PAL, you could just pay for a gun at a shop and hold it for them, and they can go to that shop and bring the invoice and get it. Has anybody ever tried that?

^^ This. He'll know immediately that it needs to be transferred into his name still. You can also apply for an ATT to the range ahead of time, so you can go shoot "his" gun while waiting over Christmas break.

Christmas will have to happen at your house, and he'll have to leave it in your safe, as per regs. If you did want to leave it at the gun shop, just buy a gift certificate for the exact value of the gun, and the Lay-Away recepit. I don't think the 'promise' of a gift carries the same weight as actually holding it, even if he has some paperwork to do before it's legally his, so I'd bring it home and let him open it.

I'm smiling just thinking about that :) You're a good brother.

Ok, Xmas at my house it is, now just need to sell something to pay for a cannon. Best part is if he doesn't like it I can keep it for myself. I wonder how high that 500 grain bullet would travel if shot straight up, would it go into space? Hahaha

Did the 'gift' idea for the wife.
Grabbed a copy of her PAL, went to the retailer, bought with my money, her PAL number.

... when the transfer was complete ..... Ta DA!

My 500 was a Christmas present from my dad and it was an awesome gift. We were in Vegas a week or so before Christmas last year where I went to a range and shot that and a few others, he asked how much they went for and then said if I could find one, buy it and he'd pay for it and that'd be my gift, not exactly a surprise on Christmas but still a nice gift.

If you buy it in your name, take it home, and keep it in your safe wrapped, give it to him Christmas morning you could call in a change of storage address to his place so he can 'borrow' it until the transfer comes thru as long as he has a LTATT and your registration it should be fine.

I would really like a .44 and a .460 to complete my S&W collection if you need another brother :)
