So I picked up a pretty haggard No.1 MkIII Enfield and didn't notice it at the time but it actually has a No.4 magazine on it. Couldn't pick up a round when I brought it out to test, it looks like the rounds will not come close to the bolt face.

I seem to remember reading that there is a way to make a No.4 magazine work in a No.1? Does anyone know about that?

I don't know how it was done but it definitely was. I have a 1915 LSA here that was given to my Grandad in 1956. It has been everywhere with parts from most of the factories who built SMLEs. It has a Longbranch No4 mag in it.

Much easier to sell it and buy another one that fits... or trade with someone who needs a No4 mag, and has a No1Mk3... (hey I may be interested! :) )

Magazines for the Number 1 were hand-made and hand-fitted.

Generally a Number 4 mag can be got into the rifle, but often it is stiff.

Best bet, as Lou sez, swap it for the right one. Always SOMEBODY wanting a Number 4 mag.

BTW, just get ONE. The rifle loads FASTER with Chargers than by swapping Magazines..... and you don't dump your rounds in the sand, either.

Good luck!

Thanks for the tips guys. I just ordered the proper No.1 magazine for the rifle from Tradex. I think I will hang on to this Parker Hale No.4 magazine because maybe it will come in useful someday.

A No. 4 mag should fit into a No. 1 with no trouble at all. It's the other way that doesn't work unless you grind off the bottom locking lug on the back of the mag. It is doesn't work, there's a locking lug issue with the rifle.
