possibly stupid question about shotgun barrel

Hey folks,

I've got a relatively new pump shotgun about a month ago and while cleaning it the other day, I noticed the barrel felt like it flared somewhat about 4 inches from the muzzle. I never noticed the flare before.

The flare is very even and gradual, so I'm wondering if its supposed to be that way. I tried taking pictures but it didn't show.

Is this normal?

The flare is there only to add thickness to the barrel for strength, the screw-in choke tubes are in this area.

Note ~ If you don't have choke tubes then it is a different story.
 
OK cool. The barrel does accept choke tubes.

I clean the thing after very trip to the range, but I never noticed it until last time. It also struck me as way too symmetrical to be a a defect, but I figured I would try to make sure.

Outside. I noticed it when I was running a lightly oiled rag along the barrel. Its hardly perceptible visually. The barrel feels like it gets a little wider.

I just hoped it wasn't from running a few slugs through the barrel with an IC choke tube.

Slugs are fine through IC choke.

You didnt shoot steel through full choke did you?
 
Nope. I've never used steel shot. No need for it as all I shoot at are paper targets or clays. Closest I come to shooting animals is smallbore silhouette and bad guy outlines on paper.

Edit: I do read manuals. Honest. The manual doesn't say ANYTHING about slugs other than not to use them with rifled barrels. It does say you can use steel shot for "all constrictions through modified".

Glad to hear nothing's wrong, because I've been amazed by how perfect this Weatherby's been. I've been talking it up something fierce. It has functioned flawlessly and I love how simple it is to takedown and clean.

They are built that way to give extra meat around the choke thread area

Some slug types are meant only for rifled or smooth barrels. Some can go in either such as challengers.
 
A rifles shotgun barrel is designed to use sabot slugs.

Old-fashioned rifled slugs (non-sabot) are generally intended for smoothbores.
