i was looking at my 38-55win 94 lever gun, and i noticed that a .357 fits in the chanber perfectly, would it be safe to use .38's or .357s in a rifle chambered for 38-55. my immediate thoughts were "no way", but the more i think about it, the more i want a more concrete answer.

Lots of cartridges fit in improper chambers. Doesn't mean it's safe. Bad idea.

.357 in a 38-55...NO!

A part from the fact that a .357 is just that and a 38-55 is .377-.379 in dia. the case would problably split and if it didn't the chamber wouldn't be fully sealed and end up spraying you in the face. With lead bullets you would smear the bore with blow by as well. Play it safe and stick with intended cartridges.

X2 on the diagrams. Good reference stuff. FYI I have a Nosler, Speer, and Barnes manual and they all have the diagrams in them.

Did you TAKE the firearms course???
Many people think its is "silly, irrelevant, without much useful info...", but this is definitely one of the things covered.
