Hi Guys,

I just bought a "post 64'" Winchester M70 in .30-06. It has had the barrel shortened to about 19" at some point, so I'm wondering if this configuration really does the '06 cartridge justice...I am pondering over a change to .270 Win.

Could someone here please let me know what is involved in changing it to a .270 Winchester chambering. Is it simply a matter of replacing the barrel with one in .270?

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer. :)

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

Assuming the new barrel is the same contour, its just a matter of installing the .270 barrel; otherwise a bit of inletting is necessary. Of course sights would have to be refitted.

Thanks!

And if I were to go with a "clean" barrel I could skip the sights I suppose...I had thought that they used the same bolt face.

What do you suppose the chances are of my finding a good, used .270 barrel for this gun?

Thanks a lot - Jeff.

A 19 inch barrel on the 06 is not a big deal, is the crown good, and is it accurate, if so and the bore has lots of life, i would leave it.
If not , haul it of and trow in a Gaillard of the same contour(so all is nice fitting in the stock) This would make a very accurate hunting rig, a piller bed at the same time. But your then dumping much cash into the rifle. Another option would be to get a take off , they come up pretty often, some are even unfired. That is what I would look at first.

Levi,

This is what I was wondering...whether I may find a take off .270 barrel.

I don't actually know how well this rifle shoots, as I haven't even tried it yet. I will today!

I was just considering my options. Thank you for your opinion about the efficacy of the 19" barrel on a .30-06. :)

Best wishes, Jeff.

rebarrel it to something "cool"...like a 35 Whelen.....or a 257 Roberts:D..

how about a 284 Winchester?

Mayyybbbeeee......;)

Thanks Rembo. Actually, I have just returned from shooting it and I don't want to do a damn thing to it now! It shoots like a dream! Ragged hole after just-about-ragged-hole at 100 yards for three shot groups...w/ two kinds of factory 180 grain ammunition.

I'll find something else to rebarrel, if need be...this rifle is too damned good to mess with. :)

Jeff.....you've obviously never heard the phrase.."don't shoot the donor":D :)

a rifle that cuts one-holers with factory ammo is a very rare item....:)
