I was watching Mark Serbu's update on the diabolus rifle. His design of the gas system caught my eyes.
It has a very short piston clamped on right in front of the barrel nut, and a shortened AR gas tube / block feeding into it.
It got me thinking that this setup could be an improvement to the wk/ws platform. First the gas piston is short, it's unlikely to break due to slight misalignment. Second, barrel with any gas port length can be used (as long as there's enough gas to cycle the action).
I guess the down side is the piston will be very hard to access for cleaning, and probably have gas blow by closer to the shooter.
Alternatively - why not go full DI like Jard or MAS 49?
