Is there a powder that does both 308 and 12g. Just starting to gather supplies. Got most of the parts for 308 and will get setup for 12g as well. I have a lb of 4064. Before I start stacking it will this be good for 12g as well

What loads are shown in your manual(s) for 4064 in 12g?

Only way that is going to happen is if using cast lead bullets in your 308. Basically down loading your rifle. Your going to want different powders. Pickup a couple of reloading manuals and they will tell what powders work. Lyman puts out different manuals for shotshell and rifles. Their is no powder that does everything. Some work well in many but normally some work better in certain cartridges.

Ill get a shotshell manual for sure. And I will be casting as well. Have to figure out what size shot.

Short answer is no.

There are shotgun powders you can use for your 308(like Red Dot) but just for fairy fart loads using cast bullets or appropriate buck shot

Thanks. I did google for a bit. So I'll be stocking 2 powders. I might get setup for 357 as well.

Before you go gathering 12g loading kit, do a quick calc to see if it makes sense for what you are going to be loading. You may find the combination of equipment, components and time required doesn't make sense compared to factory low cost 12g like standard target loads.

Hodgdon has a reloading section on their website, for both rifle and shotgun. Rifle powders are much slower than shotgun powders. Also, shotgun reloading and rifle reloading utilize different presses. Its not the best time to be getting into reloading, given the scarcity of components.

yes, but think of the money you save!

Personally, I've spent tons of money making "free" ammo. Still doing it !!
308, 12 ga, and .357.....That's 3 different primers, 2 bullet molds, sizing stuff..............and the list goes on & on!!! Yep, it's a rabbit hole that I jumped into some 50 yrs ago and still have not found my way out!\
Good luck!

It's not just the shooting more. It's the shooting of those odd ball calibers . A Weatherby 300 only costs a little more than 30-06 . So why not get a Weatherby, too ?

For some shot shells and centerfire rifle cartridges, some powders will do both, such as Lil Gun in 410/20gauge and 22 Hornet and similar cases.

Some pistol rounds, like the 357 magnum will be able to use a powder good for 12 gauge shot shells, such as 700X.

There are others as well.

You are definitely new to this game. If you can, get a "reliable"mentor to walk you through the handloading procedures and if you can't garner it from a manual or off the internet, get someone to explain about PRESSURE and what the tables tell you.

Your shotshell pressures will be extremely low in comparison to the 308 Winchester and as such you will need at least two different powders for the ammunition you listed.

You’ll find some crossover with cast .308 and shotshell data, for example Nobel Sport Vectan A0 has a 150gr cast .308 load as well as multiple 12g, 20g, 16g etc data. Some pistol load data as well, so you’ll have to do some reading and checking for crossover.

yeah I'am new. Still havent rolled my first one. I have managed to gather most of the parts for 308 mostly from here. The primer tool shell holder just cleared customs yay. From reading looks like 12g is easier to load and doesnt require much. A lead mold and some hand tools. A press would make it faster looks like. I'll have to see what powder is good for 357 and 12g. Wont be getting into 357 loading right away just planning ahead
