Powder charge vs barrel lengh

Hi folks!.

Anyone can help me to feagure out powder charge vs barrel lengh.

My relaoding book give me some charge to use for a tested 18-20 inc barrel lengh. If my gun have 12 inch Can I reduce powder charge?

Typically barrel length increase gives velocity increase or vice/versa.

I cannot speak for going shorter as you are as I only have loaded for 20"-26" barrels.

Some of my loads for the longer barrels are below starting loads in my books for shorter barrels.

I would think you need a different/faster powder than the book may show.Some of the more experienced loaders hopefully can speak up and help out because I am curious now also.

Guess knowing what you are loading would be a help as well.

ON hodgdon data show the same amount of powder for pistol and rifle : 23-24 gr

My plan its to reload for my 16inch puma and my futur 12 in Rossi mare leg....

But Its probably more simple to load for the rifle and use the same for the mare leg...The worst scenario will be more burning powder lost outside the barrel in a big Red flame...

Use same data for loading no matter what length of barrel. A too lite load of slow burning powder can create problems. Follow your manual.

In general terms, the powder charge that gives maximum velocity will do so in long and short barrels.
Now, muzzle flash and blast is another thing altogether.

You will be surprised, how little velocity you loose from 20 to 12 inch, i do reload for them the same load and the powder of choice for the 44 mag is Lit'lgun, the fastest and great accuracy with less pressure... JP.
