powder choice question

I have decided that I want to stick with black powder whenever possible. The question I have is whether or not is should use fffg in a 50 cal. The powder recommended by manufacturer is ffg. My local black powder old timer says fffg is all he ever uses (up to 54 cal when he uses ffg). So what in your opinion would be the best choice. Things that concern me are pressure, ignition, accuracy and fouling. I shoot a 45 tc Hawkin and a CVA express double rifle in 50 cal. I do like traditional shooting and would rather not use the prodex or triple 7 option unless I have to. Thanks to all who have answered my questions in the past it is appreciated. Mike

I use 3F exclusively in all of my muzzle loading rifles up to .58 and usually use it in an original .62 cal trade gun (because I get better ignition). I use 3F because of considerably reduced fowling. I would think that you could comfortably shoot up to 100 gr of 3F in a .50 cal although for target shooting 50 grains is plenty and even for hunting 70 grains is probably plenty.

Thanks for the advice. You seem to be of like mind to my friend. It is not that I doubt what he has to say as much as I like many opinions and experiences to help me decide what is best. I have been a smokeless shooter for many years but I am new to this.

Val Forgett's load in his Navy Arms .58 Hawken Hunter was 220 grains of FFG and a 610 grain Shilo Stakebuster bullet!!
Hephalumps and Cape Buffalo in Africa, and I saw a pic of him knoking a bison over backwards in one of his books!
