I recently purchased a new Hornady LNL powder hopper. One annoying feature is that when I empty the hopper, ther is always a coat of powder clinging to the painted metal parts of the hopper. I tried cleaning with alcohol, but ther was no improvement. What should I do?

Static! I keep dryer sheets in all my empty hoppers, it definitely helps but may not completely eliminate the problem.

Once you get enough powder "varnish" on it, the granules won't stick. The clear reservoir will discolour too. I know some guys don't like that and there are a couple of solutions to it, but it's an aesthetic problem, not a functional one.

Maybe try this ;
Hornady recommends a complete disassembly and cleaning prior to first use. They ship their products with a coat of wax to protect the metal from corrosion. I did this to mine and it works great .

This was a critical step I missed when I started reloading. Had a brand new Lyman 55 and I couldn’t stand how it was always so inconsistent. Turns out it says right in the manual in no direct quote “clean the f**king thing before use!”.
Cleaned it and rinsed with boiling water, dried immediately. Worked 100% ever since.
Likely the experience OP is experiencing if actually bought brand new.

As a typical male, I did not read the instructions before use. What should I clean it with (i.e. solvent)?

Hot water and regular unscented Sunlight dish soap. The scented dish soaps leave a residue that doesn't work as well. Avoid Dawn soap.
