Powder coating a rifle?

During this process the barrel and action has to be heated to 400F. My question is would this damage the barrel or action?

400 degrees will not affect the heat treatment.

Just out of curiosity, what temperature will affect heat treatment, metal structure, etc of steel(not stainless)????

Not much more heat and some steels depending on their hardness will have heat treatment affected. Usually that starts occuring at about 550 degrees (straw colour).

But wouldn't drawing to a straw yellow only change the character of the very hardest (brittle-hard) tempers?

I wouldnt do it..

1. Its not that pleasing of a finish for firearms..plating and or phosphatizing is superior.

For a variety of reasons...look at alternatives. BTW you can powder coat down below 250F as well there is UV curable powder as well which can be done at virtually ambient temps.
2. Temps up around that range can theoreticall weaken springs.
