Looking for some starting loads for 300 win mag, shooting 150gr Barnes TSX and 150gr SMK's (I know that's a light bullet for a 300 mag, but I have a lot of them). I have the info from Barnes and their reload book, but some hands on experience from shooters would help. In particular a recommended powder. I've used Varget to great success in my 308, but I think the burn rate is not suited for the 300 mag.

No need to go with the slowest powders with light bullets. With 150's (not TSX) I've had great success with IMR4350. And I think I've tried every powder under the sun that can go into a 300.

The load I have come to absolutely rely on with 100% confidence is the Barnes 150 grain XLC ahead of 75.5 grains of IMR-4350 using the CCI 250 magnum primer in Winchester cases with an O.A.L of 3.340 ,the industry maximum length. When fired out of my Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker,26" barrel topped with the Leupold Vari-X III 3.5x10,I get just over 1 m.o.a out to 300 yards (if I do my part) with a chronographed velocity of 3365 f/s,my point blank range is 278 yards and a maximum zero range of 343 yards using a 6" circle.I have used this actual load for the biggest moose I ever took at an amazing 1375 lbs.live weight back in 2001 in northern Ontario. He dropped at the shot at a laser measured 285 yards hitting him in the spine just past the hump.I surprised the hell out of myself with that shot but not surprised that the Barnes performed that well.No brag, just fact.

I like RL22 for the heavier bullets (180+) but reviewing manuals I see slightly faster powders are reccommended for lighter bullets.

On line info can be found @ powder mfg. websites. search IMR. Alliant , Hogden powders.

I use IMR4350 46gr with a 150gr Hornady SST. This is a .308 Winchester load and I can shoot them all day without bruising my shoulder.

I am going to try 110gr Hornady's as a coyote round.

Find the 4350 has excellent burn and is very accurate.
