starting my first powder horn build from scratch. making it kit like so that my boy can put it together for the final assembly. it will accompany his .32 CVA. this is a shot of the unshaped plug and then fitted. the rings on the horn,i started during the winter while watching tv. i`ll be fabricating a powder cut off from brass and copper, and the cap will double as a 30 gr measure made from a casing. the pointy end of the horn just has not been cut off yet.

its hard finding horns which are thick enough at the tip to allow decorative rings without cutting all the way through. The other extreme is horns that are too thick as you progress towards the base of the horn. One suggestion you might try; I use a belt sander to make the tapered oval for the base plug with the sander upside down and turning the plug with my hands. Then soak the base of the horn in warm water for 5 or 10 minutes so that it forms around any imperfections in the fitting of the plug

i`ve had these for years, matching pair i found at value village of all places. i used them as drinking horns for a costume one halloween a long time ago. they are old & dry. the horn is solid up to the second ring in. the back is 3/16 almost all the way around. i fit the walnut plug with a rasp. it is quite tight, and that will see some epoxy to seal up that.

Assuming you'll use a bung in the wood plug for the cap to fill the horn may I suggest that it be shaped to form a built in funnel? The horn I got a while back was done that way and it's great for filling from a can or plastic bottle of powder. It also ends up with the bung sticking out less where it can get bounced of things.
