Powder Horn from Labrador

This gentleman hailed from Indian Cove on Great Caribou Island Labrador where he spent his life as a sailor.

Anyone have an explanation for the Xs in his name and the meaning of the last two letters?

My guess is that they seem to be spacers to indicated gaps in the text. Interesting looking horn

Wonder if he did it while sailing--someone mentioned the fish do not look local to his home.
