What's the difference in powder holding capacity between a 7mmRemMag and 300WSM cartridge? Looking to trade my 7 for a 300wsm but have heard limited space with the larger bullets. Thanks.

By larger bullets you mean heavier?
to achieve 3000fps with a 7MM Rem Mag with a 168gr bullet...
71.1gr retumbo, or 64.3gr RL-19, or 71.9gr of Magnum.

to do this with a 300WSM:
74.9gr of MagPro, or 57.8gr of H4895 or to really boot it up 70.1gr of RL-19 will give you 3100fps.

The max bullet weight I see with the 7MM MAg is 175gr bullet, and for the 300WSM I see it as 200gr ( according to Sierra software).

A 200gr bullet in the 300WSM needs 68.0gr of RL-19 to go 2900fps and only 66.9gr of RL-19 to go 2850fps.

The max speed listed for 7MM mag shooting a 175gr bullet is 3000fps and this is with 63.5gr of RL-19.

I use 168gr HPBT for my 300WSM on top of 63.8gr of RL-19. when I shake the case.. you can hear the podwer "rattle" in there.. there's still room for more powder. I use this amount of powder because this is my reciepe for clover leafs.
And I have used 180gr bullets which require 68.0 gr of powder... this is the same amount of powder required for a 200gr bullet. There is still "rattle" when you shake the case.

I dont know if this has helped, or confused you. Sorry if its made things confusing. BUt what I have found, is that when you use the same calibre, the heavier bullets will use the same, or less powder.. and they will fly slower.

If you compare the 168gr bullet in both the 7MM and the 300WSM.. you can actually save powder by going with the 300WSM using H4895.
3000fps by using 57.8 gr in the 300WSM VS 71.9gr of Magnum in the 7MM.

But really, I dont think there is anything a 180gr or a 200gr bullet will do that your 7MM using a 175gr cant achieve.

I love my 300WSM and wouldnt trade it for anything at this point. But if your rifle is in good shape and shoots well... the change is up to you.

and I just checked trajectory on similar bullets:
7MM shooting 2800fps VS 300WSM shootng 2800fps...

the 7MM saves 4.3 gr of powder to have almost identical trajectory as the 300WSM and the 7MM has 200ftlbs more energy at 300yards using a 168gr bullet going 2800fps.
BUt, if you go with a 200gr bullet in the 300WSM.. you can achieve 2590ftlbs @ 300yrds, VS 2068.8 with a 175 from the 7MM Rem Mag.

Wow, thanks for the info, some nice shooting there. Haven't made up my mind yet but like the idea of more power in a lighter rifle and thought the .30 cal would give me a few more options for reloading. Thanks again, Campbery

The point of the WSM's etc is to use newer powders that give the same or nearly the same velocities and ballistics as the older, larger cartridge. The powder capacities don't matter as you won't be using the same powder.
