Powder Went Bad

View attachment 196656 i still have one of mine, and it seems to be still OK.

Open the lid and inspect for rust. If it smells acidic at all be careful with it.

The bottom of your can looks discolored. ????????????????

I used up the last of the #33 powder I had quite a while ago. I believe it was 4198 equivalent but a bit slower. Good consistent powder.

The non canister lots of powder that were sold by Ammo Mart weren't intended for those that bought a can or two and wanted to store them over a few decades. There were all sorts of reasons that the powders became available as well.

Sometimes the powder was left over from disassembled ammo that was being disposed of, rather than being put onto the surplus market. This stuff may not have been stored properly or the lots had reached their best before date or during testing they were found to be inconsistent in performance. This used to happen fairly regularly and likely still does. We just don't get much opportunity to purchase those powders in Canada any longer.

Some of the bulk powders Tom Higginson used to send me to evaluate and develop equivalent loads from the data sheets he provided were also large lots of powder both new/old that weren't used for whatever reason by the original purchasers. One type which I thankfully still have quite a bit of on hand was made for a commercial cartridge manufacturer, Winchester I believe, and there was a large overrun in production of the powder so it was surplussed on the market.

The powder was H414SL10. It was a slow lot of H414/W760. It's a very useful ball powder for such cartridges as the 6.5x55/7x57/30-06 size cases. Works well in the 243 with heavy bullets and magnum primers as well as giving very impressive performance in the 308Win with bullets 150grn and heavier. Some of the new canister grade powders are very close but just not as consistent.

Not all of the non canister powders were so gifted. Some of the bulk lots Tom sent to me were very inconsistent and didn't burn at rates anywhere near what the specs said they should. I would work with the components he sent me and send back my recommendations and the test results. Because I wasn't the only in the field person he had evaluating his potential products, he wouldn't make his decisions on my findings alone.

I sincerely dislike purchasing ONE small can of propellant. I guess if it's all you can use or afford it's OK. I use to much to make the trips to town to purchase the powder or have it sent to me with hazmat expenses not to purchase in quantity. I also like to blend all of the lots of the same burn rate of powder together into ONE BIG LOT to get better consistency over a long period of time and large quantity of ammo.

I am finding that I don't bother with the new powder offerings even though they are very good and very consistent from lot to lot. I just happen to have enough on hand to last to my end day. Not only that $40 per pound or less makes me cringe.
