Hi I just purchased my first rifle other then the 22 my dad gave me. He also gave me all his reloading stuff since he hasn't been into hunting and shooting for about 10 years. My question is what would be a good powder to try first. It seems varget seems to be popular. And do the type of primers used(brands) really make much difference for accuracy? Thanks for the help.

I've tried a few powders in my sons 7-08 but always come bask to Varget. With the usual disclaimer about working up!! I load a 139 Hornady Interbond over 43grn of Varget using Winchester brass and CCI250 primers. It Regularly rattles off .625" groups when I do my part. One deer he took last fall dropped RFN! at 175yds.

WIN 760, excellent accuracy , probably the best powder for metering and flow. I use 48gr with 139gr bullet and regular large rifle primers. No issues and a muzzle vel of 2870 ft/sec on average

Pretty happy with my first attempt at reloading...

I would really like to load up 5 more 48.0 gr and 5 more 48.5 gr and shoot 5 shot groups... perhaps I will.:)

I was amazed watching the group go tighter and tighter and then at 49.0 (perhaps even at 48.5, not sure...) start to open up.

I had no issues with pressure and found the loads quite comfortable...

Now I need to buy Chrony... had one once...had little use for it and sold it...
Guess I should have tried this years ago...

140 gr TSX and RL 19...

I'll try Varget next and hopefully get a couple of good loads with two powders...we'll see.

Thanks guys... it's fun !!! :sHa_shakeshout:
