It's official...I'm throwing out my pumpmaster 760 in the trash tonight.

Is there a powerful, accurate, quiet and cheap (max 80$) pistol that could shoot pellets (not BB's) to approx. 500 fps? I don't want to pump. Semi-auto would be nice too. Wouldn't mind Co2 (I guess that's a given considering I don't want to pump.

Cheers,

Fish

I saw this one at Canadian Tire (add the T's):
hp://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/5/SportsRec/1/Hunting/Airguns/PRDOVR~0754419P/Red+Dot+Air+Pistol.jsp

Looks pretty cool.

Thing is, the pumpmaster was my dad's. He bought it like 15 years ago so we could have something to shoot...it was awesome, but I wanted to oil it up and screwed up. I can't reassemble it anymore. So I'd want to replace it with a pistol that's powerful enough to kill a gopher at extremely close range. He has gophers every couple of years that go under his shed and he needs to get rid of them. I'd want a pistol more than a rifle as it's more compact. But it should be hard hitting enough to dispatch a gopher and relatively quiet since he lives in an urban development.

We had an air pistol too when we were younger and that thing couldn't even pierce a can of cola! Ok, I might be exagerating,...but you could literally see the bullet drop as it was being fired away.

Restricted air pistols are pretty uncommon. I have a 177 spring driven Gamo that is supposed to be 495 fps, but its borderline effective on gophers, squirrels and pigeons, even close up. I understand your interest in something more powerful. C02 can be a nuisence in that I don't trust they will hold their pressure for days after the cartridge is peirced. That's why I like springers.

Good luck on your search... 500+fps from a air pistol makes it restricted IIRC.

The HW45 in 177 will do just over 500 fps = restricted. The 20 and 22cal will do under 500fps and that is why you will rarely see one for sale in 177. You'll need to buy a x-tra barrel to convert it.

Some correct me if I'm wrong.

Sorry if I wasn't clear on this. Although I have my PAL, I wouldn't want one that is 500+ fps. I meant to say "as close to 500 fps without going over" (like in the price is right! ;)).

So any comments on that beeman gun?

I wonder if a crossbow might not be a more suitable weapon for urban pest control? There is bound to be more penetration with a bolt than a pellet, and it might even pin the critter in place.

You're asking for ferrari performance out of a civic priced car. You're not going to get it, but it's not too far off.

Buy a crosman 2240 $77-$80, get a steel breech kit $50 and a longer barrel to make the most out of the co2. Not sure how much a barrel costs, I think within $30. A crosman 2240 with the proper mods will easily go over 500 fps, so you have to becareful about choosing the right length barrel. Do some research.

Some other things you can do, increase the strength of the hammer spring, decrease the strength of the valve spring, polish the inside of the valve to reduce turbulence.

And example of what can be done:

There are even people who have gone and bulk filled the gun with paintball tanks and added custom stocks to it etc, basically turned the pistol into a carbine by adding a 24" barrel and stock.

I don't quite see the point of spending 200$+ on customizing an 80$ air pistol to replace a 67$ pumpmaster rifle (on special at canadian tire this week). I'm willing to spend a bit extra to get a pistol instead of a rifle for the fun factor of plinking with an air pistol, but no way I'm spending that kind of money on an air gun. I have a .22 I'm working on to fill my customizing needs.

Thanks,

Fish

Hmm, not sure what you had in mind...but I just took my crossbow course (ICAA). And a crossbow will go right through a *MOOSE*...I wouldn't want to shot it at a gopher in an urban environment. That would just be scary dangerous.

The point is that the pump master doesn't meet your needs like you said, and asked for certain criteria in a new pistol:

Is there a powerful, accurate, quiet and cheap (max 80$) pistol that could shoot pellets (not BB's) to approx. 500 fps? I don't want to pump. Semi-auto would be nice too. Wouldn't mind Co2 (I guess that's a given considering I don't want to pump.

Getting back down to reality, nothing that costs $80 is going to fullfil those criteria, it looked like you were most concerned with power, so I suggested the CHEAPEST option of getting that power within an air pistol.

If you think $200 is expensive for a gun then you should get out of airgunning because you're never going to be satisfied with any airgun that YOU buy.

Your second best bet would be a beretta px4 storm blowback pistol that costs around $100 before taxes and gets something like 430 fps. But then factor in cost of co2 $20 for 25 cartridges and ammo $8 for 500 .177 pellets and you're easily going to end up spending more than you do for bulk .22LR.

Here look at this page, it has most conventional semi auto airpistols listed with average fps and pictures of shot groupings
http://www.co2airguns.net/collection/index.htm

and do your own research.

"...gophers every couple of years that go under his shed..." No gophers in Quebec. Shooting them with anything inside town will very likely be illegal too.

Check out the crosman 2240, its a single shot but it hits hard and is deadly accurate, I think cnt sells em for $70.

Seems your asking for alot for alittle money. Wished it were that simple. As I have just forked out 250.00 for a Bakail Mp-513m 22cal-800fps. And that seems on the cheaper side for that performance. Should be here in a few days, looking forward to see how it compares to my RWS 34 177cal. If you want to shoot gophers you should get enough gun and be humain.

If you can find an old crosman 1322 pump up air pistol in good shape. I know its a pump but they could shoot over 500fps and their .22cal . I had one years ago and took many squirrels , muskrats, bunnies, and crows with it. Wish I still had it.

Not sure where you learn to shoot, but it used to take us only 1 well placed shot to finish up a "marmotte" with the old pumpmaster. Not sure how more "humain" you want us to be...Keep in mind we're at very close range here (20 ft or so).
