Hi everyone
I just bought a PPC revolver and need some advise on loading 38 special light loads(powders, bullets, starting charge weights etc). Any info is appreciated.
Thanks
My buddy use to load for a couple of guys who shot PPC. Standard FWC bullet - I believe the weight was 148 grains. One of the guys liked 3 grains of Winchester 231 under it, the other guy prefered 3.5 grains of 231. Both were pretty soft recoil - I tried both and there wasn't much difference between them. Hope that helps.
I am working 3.6 gr of W231 under a 158 cast bullet. I am using 357 brass. I know not in the book. It is a nice light load and shoots double action mode with good accuracy.
Even a slightly too heavy load can result in the HBWC skirts separating(double the hits on a close range target), or you get small lead onion rings on the table. Aside from that, very accurate and low recoil. Unless your range uses 50 yard for final stage, no need for higher velocity or wind bucking. A DEBBWC(double ended bevel base wad cutter) should also work well. Wad cutters are seated deep so some brands of brass/nickel cases will bulge.
Another vote for 2.7 Bullseye under a 148 WC. I tried Titegroup early on but don't remember the load. I would say if you want to try that start lower than 2.7 and work up. In PPC as long as it has enough speed to break the cardboard you are good...... )
We had a guy a couple years ago running handloads. Every one sounded like a squib. And when we would walk down to look at our targets, his would always have a two vertical paper tears tangent downwards from the bottom of the round hole. I think they were going so slowly that the bullet was starting to tilt downwards, causing the top of the button face to cut paper and the bottom to just pull and rip the paper instead of cut.
From 3.0 to 3.2 Titegroup with Hornady and 3D 148gr HBWC or 148grs DEWC, depending on which gun it's for, S&W M52, Dan Wesson 15vH or BSA Martini cadet.
That is why you never lowered your hand at that auction! Lol
I had problems when I lowered my 231 less than 3.0 gr burning really dirty and flakes of powder getting under the extractor star which made it hard for the cylinder to spin.
