PPU 198gr FMJ-BT 8mm Mauser PP8.11

So I have shot around 160 rounds of PPU 198gr FMJ-BT 8mm Mauser PP8.11 from my K98K 1941 CE. I figured out that I need to set my sights to 750m for rounds to hit at 100m. I put a Scout scope 7x on the K98 and I got 1.5” groups. So it shoots nice just actual velocity specs online are all over the place.
During my investigation I chronographed a few shots and noticed it was low (Can’t remember how low I should have wrote it down)
Looking online PPU-USA states that it is 2425fps however on a retailer sight states that is it 2182fps.
Looking on youtube a guy Chronographed the same ammo and got an average of 2043fps.
PPU also states that bullet path above line @ 300m is -18.1 in the catalogue and on web page info -23.8
Apparently PP8.11 has a BC of 0.559 uses bullet B022 or B001 with 0.001” difference between the two diameters.

Has anyone used this ammo enough to realise specs are not accurate? I have also noticed that the S&B SP ammo I have used think it was 196gr is about 2400fps and my sights set to 450m for 100m.
Anyone know actual specs for the PPU ammo?

Matt

The 8mm Mauser PPU sold for the America market is at 2100 +/- for the lawyers. The PPU 8x57 sold for the European market is loaded more warmly closer to its true potential. Same cartridge but one's watered down for the lawyers.

PPU brass is good stuff, after you shoot it save the brass and reload it to get the best performance from your k 98
I've heard from a few guys that say the privi is loaded on the weak side

North American 8mm PPU is good plinking ammo IMHO. Keep the brass and reload it to full speed! I have mountains of it just waiting.

My Zrak scoped Yugoslav K98 loves S&B. Sub MOA all day long if I do my part.

Once I get my M48A Scout back from the workshop I’ll head out to crown land with my Chronograph and get some readings for StrelokPro and some actual ballistic information happening.
PPU is good brass!!
I also want to test out that “1939” Russian reloaded non-corrosive 197.5gr stuff canada ammo was selling. Supposed to be 2500fps just need to work out the BC

Lol my mausers hate PPU ammo it's amazing I have shot 2 boxes approx 20rds each gun and with irons never hit paper once. A buddy gave me 2 boxes of the stuff because he couldn't hit anything with it Nd neither could I. I have no idea where those bullets went. Same rifles with S&B are 1inch or less moa same with Winchester (8 inches lower than s&b@100m) and hornady (hits about 6 inches lower than S&B). All ammunition except PPU hits on the exact same vertical plane just differences in height at 100m. I am not sure why PPU goes someplace else. Maybe much higher or much lower than my other rounds. Even on a large board (stack on box side) i coumd not track down hole. Fired those 40rdz of PPU and learned it just wasn't for my guns or I got a batch of really bad ones. Perhaps the issue was the powder charge i may have been looming at the wrong ballistic chart assuming it was supposed to land similar to the Winchester SP that I had 1 box of. I have a tough time believing that my results are typical of this ammo as it seems popular.

I had the same problem as you philhut. Until i found a huge peace of cardboard to place at 50m to shoot at. I then found the holes i made and worked my way up the sight ladder and moving the target back to 100m. With the sights set to 750m i was 2" high @100m and kind of on at 200m.
With S&B Ammunition i had to set the sights to 450m for same result.
I corrected my PPU shooting with a BadAce Tactical Scout mount and a Vortex Crossfire II scout scope. Zeroed it for 100m and was getting 1.5" average groups with best @ 1MOA. This made the rife way more fun to shoot and no permanent modifications.
