I bought this pet toy/laser pointer from CDN Tire today for about $6. I was thinking how I don't know how steadily I am holding my gun while dry firing, and thought some kind of laser sight would help. So I came up with a cheap method.

The pointer has masking tape on one side to protect the finish of the gun. The switch is an intermittent one, so I need two thick elastics to hold it 'ON'. The slide of the gun is steel, so I may look at rigging up something with magnets to hold the pointer in place, and come up with something better for the switch.

Yeah, I like it. I have a pointer in the kitchen I might rig up! So the next question is do you dry fire your pistol or use a snap cap? :D

I use A-Zoom snap caps with my center-fires.

I was looking at Lee Valley and found this. I bet the clip could be re-bent to hold the pointer, and masking tape could cover the magnet to protect the gun's finish. I'm gonna get one Friday and try it out:

Hey, thanks for the great Idea :D

I went out to the garage and made myself a snap cap too. I had a piece of rubber was exactly the depth of my primer pocket so I cut it, glued it and jammed it in.

The only problem is that this exercise will have no positive reinforcement and practice for actual shooting.

When shooting, you are concentrating on the front sight. During practice any movement of the front sight will constitute to off shooting.

Staring at the target for a laser dot from your pen wrapped around your slide will do little to help you 'practice.'

(The above of course do not apply as much for the laser grip/laser attachment users)

Actually, I aimed mine up and to the side so I could look down the sights and focus on the front post and still see the laser out of the corner of my eye. Also, the benefit of using a .45 is that you can put the laser down the barrel and still rack the slide :D

I just watched Rambo and spent the majority of the movie shooting at the bad guys. By the end of the movie I could hold it pretty still.

you know they make laser catridges for just this reason right? they flash when the firing pin hits them.

Slavex, got a link? I've never seen one, but damn, that sounds like the best of both worlds. It would really help me with my double action shots at 25yds for PPC.

'Course, I'd have to buy 6 :(
