pre 64 model 70 bolt help

Hey guys a few weeks back I picked up a 53 or 54 model 70 in 270, she had been handcuffed and under a bed for the last 10-15 years, I figuring myself noble paid the ransom and now she figures I own her... haha k all joking aside it was fairly dirty... no rust thank god but dirty, as all hell I stripped it down as far as I could remember, from my days of owning mil mausers but didnt feel comfy screwing around with the shroud, and firing pin I now feel it needs a complete stripping. ... so uh any help videos or explanations how I can do this... I also want to take the safety paddle out as well.

Am I reading correctly that you want to take the bolt shroud, firing pin assembly and safety apart? Seems like a lot of effort. You can get them pretty clean as a single assembly. Unless they are REALLY filthy I would leave it alone.
 
yep thats exactly what i want to do, the safety seems to be a bit gritty so i wanna clean it up completly, i like taking apart my rifles and putting them together, helps in knowing how exactly it works and for greasing/oiking purposes
 
The safety and bolt sleeve latch are retained by very small pins. I wouldn't suggest removing them.
It is easy enough to remove the firing pin assembly.
Close the bolt, apply the safety to the middle position. Press the bolt sleeve latch, and unscrew the assembly from the bolt body. Push the tip of the firing pin against something solid, and disengage the safety.
The collar which retains the mainspring is removed by pushing it toward the rear, and turning it. Be careful; the spring is strong. Once the mainspring is removed, remove the screw which traps the firing pin from the bolt sleeve. Remove the firing pin.

Be careful when reassembling. It is necessary to compress the mainspring, get the collar into place, and turn it to lock.
You do not want to lose control and launch the collar and spring.

It would be easiest to simply remove the fining pin and bolt sleeve assembly, flush everything with cleaning solvent, and then lubricate sparingly.

I just did this myself on a 2003 lefty. The firing pin spring is VERY strong. Wear eye protection, I had parts flying everywhere when I pulled it apart, lol. :runaway: I got smarter when I reassembled it - I cut the neck off a 300 WM brass, then drilled out the base of the case with a 9/16 bit. After that I cut down the centre of the case from the base towards the neck and then cut in from the side to create a notch. Hope that makes sense. This allows you to put the spring washer on top of the spring which you can then compress with the base of the brass. Once you have it compressed you can reinstall the retaining C washer, then you just have to wiggle the piece of brass free.

A side note is that the new winchester's don't have the pin that held the bolt body to the firing pin. The safety is what retains the bolt body to the firing pin on the new winchester's. You just have to push the safety to the fire position.
