So, I've picked up 1962 model 70 barreled action for a project. I've been doing some reading and apparently some people modify their rifles with the "gas block" installed on the newer model 70 classics, because the pre 64 action did not direct the gas from a case failure/punctured primer away from the shooters face, but rather inadvertently towards it through the left bolt raceway.

I'm wondering just how necessary this modification is, and if so, has any one had it done, and could they recommend a good smith to complete the work.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

All CRF Winchesters direct the gas into the left raceway. The gas block is a partial cure for this and will reduce the amount of gas which reaches the shooter's face in the event of a minor leakage (blown primer). I have retro-fitted the block into several pre-64 model 70's but mostly because it protects the left hand (upper) locking lug from being battered by the bolt stop. It is necessary to shorten the bolt stop to maintain the proper bolt throw and ejection.

Even after 30 years of production Winchester did not think they needed a gas block when they discontinued the pre 64 version,
The post 64 did not have a gas block for another 25 years so just how important was it !
