I've kinda been feeling nostalgic lately, so I've been purging some of my modern rifles in favour of the classics. Although I don't have the play funds available to purchase the pristine examples, I've been concentrating on the vintage Winchester Lever Guns. It's been slow going, but I've purchased two this month....a Model 92 44-40 Saddle Ring Carbine made in 1906, and today a Model 1894 WW2 era 32 Special. I've been doing a lot of reading on the 94' and besides looking for a clean pre 64' model, the general consensus seems to be to try to find an odd duck.....I found a fairly clean 94' today which was made somewhere between 39'-48' according to the serial number, but although Winchester records were lost for these years, some folks say I can zero in much closer to the production date because of the flat barrel band.....any thoughts?

Road King has it... '47.

I shot my first deer and my fifth deer five minutes apart with a Win '94 .32 Special... Don't know what possessed me to sell it considering the history it had in our family... "Flash Stupidity!" I am considering seeking a year based replacement in good condition... I have seen them from time to time... I have '94's in .30/30, .44 and .22 Mag... Very fun rifles... I'm not a collector, I'm a shooter and they get shot pretty regularly.

Thank you!.....I've heard that there were additional records from one of the Winchester departments that filled in the blank years that were previously lost, but wasn't sure how accurate they were. I'm happy with a 47' model

Is there an accurate on-line reference available? I'm a little concerned now that my pre 64' carbine may not in fact be a pre 64' at all. Thanks.

You can tell a pre and post just by picking them up and cycling the lever... If it feels like you are holding a Red Ryder, then it is a "post"... If you get all "warm and tingly" then it is a "pre!" But go to the winchester website and look under "history"... You can look up your serial number there.

Easiest way if you are unfamiliar with Pre-64 Winchesters...
On the bottom of the action, at the forward end of the part that hinges open (the link) when the lever is operated... there is a pin going through the action that this part hinges on... if there is a small screw (link pin stop screw) (D)in the center holding the pin in place, it is a Pre-64. Post 64's do not have this screw.
