Basically, it's a learning curve. Find the game, and study it's habits. 'Learn' what they do, and when they do it.
Along the way you will find out where they eat and sleep, and what they prefer to eat in your area.
Find their trails, study when they move.
Keep in mind, that under hunting/rutting pressure, some things will change.
All things that make you a better hunter, as well as a more knowledgeable one.

I start mine now,(shed antler hunting), but depending on where you hunt, the game may not be in the same area as they are in the fall. for example- if they migrate for the winter.

i call it hiking. i go out looking for sheds in the spring to see what survived the last hunting season. i do some glassing in the summer looking for elk and sheep.

keep in mind that lots of game moves, elk can be here today and gone tomorrow, muleys have summer and winter range. i find that scouting for whitetail only works early, once they figure out it is hunting season, habits change.
