Hello,

I am new to shooting and am awaiting a transfer for an S&W M&P 2.0

I am a member at a range and am wondering what maintenance steps do I have to take pre shooting for the first time.

Cheers

Like first cleaning / inspection of the firearm?

So I like to do a detailed dissembly of any new (or used) firearm and give all the parts a good clean / lubrication.
Couple pull throughs of the barrel as well. Never hurts to do this, gets all the factory oil/grease off. Also can ensure nothing is visibly wrong with your gun.

I mean, you probably don't need to do anything. Just load it up and start shooting.

I usually will spray it down with an aerosol cleaner to get rid of built-up grease/oil. Mind the plastics with things like brake cleaner though. Hornady One-shot (the CLP, not the case lube) is great, flashes away quickly and leaves a nice, barely-there layer of protection over the metalwork. Then a drop of oil on a Q-tip and run it along the slide rails, again very thin film. Then you can shoot it for hundreds of rounds without a problem.

The only thing I was paying a little extra attention to was in the manual. The M+p manual does state you must inspect and ensure the firing pin does not protrude at all prior to using. there is a pic showing what it should and shouldn't look like. I can see there could be a dangerous situation if its damaged out the box, but I was/am new to all this, and maybe it isn't a big deal at all?, checked and it was fine, drop of oil here and there and then fun time.
