Posting this AR performance here as this Precision 30 Herrett rifle is starting to come together. Had a good range day today with -5 C temps and some snow. There was a slight wind blowing that did not hinder the 100/200 yard results. 110 Sierra, 31.6 gns H335, Fed Match primers in new twice fired Hornady brass.

The 20" barrel is from Jury Custom Precision Barrels out west.

Those groups will tighten up once you tune your load. Let's hear about some specs in the build!

NEA billet upper and Lower, ya ya I know about the hate for NEA.
20" Rifle length Gas system Jury Custom Barrel from Red Deer, Alberta.
JP clamp on adjustable gas block.
Midwest Industries 15" rail.
Aero Precision NiB BC
Daniel Defense 6.8 SPC bolt.
BCM Gunfighter Charge Handle (Large).
Ruger 6.8 SPC mags.
LUTH-AR A2 buttstock.
Mission First Tactical pistol Grip.
Yankee Hill Push pull take down pins.
Seekins Precision Billet mag release
B.A.D lever.
CMMG fire control group.(yup needs something better).
BURRIS scope mount and Vortex 2x7 crossfire scope (this was borrowed of another build and will be changed to a 2-14 or something of that nature.

My challenge with this build is going in two directions. One is the cycling issue with a 30 caliber in a rifle length gas system requires a large, very large gas port. I have been incrementally increasing the size until I achieved reliable cycling and bolt lock up on last round. This required a .125 gas port to achieve the desired result. This is the max size on a similar build on most 7.62x39 rifle length systems which was the blueprint for this. If I had to do it all over I would have selected a mid length like my 16" build. OH well live and learn for the next one.

The second challenge is finding a suitable propellant. This caliber is suited and built on AA1680 powder which is impossible to obtain here in Canada which is forcing me to experiment with the likes of RE7/10, H335, H4198 and IMR4198 powders.

I feel that once the rifle has been dialed in it will improve on what already is good accuracy.

That's the real problem today. Getting any powder at all has slowed down any handloading experimenting.

I like what you have done with that AR .30 Herrett
I plan on using a Savage or Remington HV barrel and adapting it for 7.62x39. I would also select gas porting at Mid or Carbine for best results in the .30 cal.

I have noticed a number of 7.62 fabricators using both Mid and carbine length systems for a given barrel length and now after my experience I would choose Mid for sure. I also have a 16" AR Performance build that is in mid length with a .093 post size that runs like a bear. Also Constructor from AR Performance and with his experience suggests a mid length with a .086-.089 opening when using AA1680.

I am planning on another build in a shorter 10.5" barrel and may just get another Jury Barrel in the preferred MID length and have the current one shortened or use my reamer, go-no go gauges to modify a 300 ACC barrel.

Try this place for powder. http://www.lawryshootingsports.com/

Speaking of triggers, I see your looking for something better.

Bill Wylde use to do a trigger job in which the selector was turned to the FA side and became a set trigger reducing the weight to about 1 lb crisp IIRC.
Now, if I can figure out how to do that I will setup my own. I should have never sold that Colt I had that Bill worked on. He's the guy and others that did Benchrest matches with their AR's back in the day.

Changed my scope from the 2x7 to a Nikon 4x16 and shot this 200 yd group with a heavier projectile. It was a 130 Hornady, Hornady brass, H335 at 31.2 gns and set off with Fed Match primer using 10x power on the scope.
