Precision Armament MA-72 vs. M11 vs. Insite Arms Heathen vs. Coretac CoreBrake v.3

Actually there isnt any slap/blast from the shooter perspective on a 16" built. I wouldn't put it on a 10.5" built for the reason you mentionned thought.

Its a perfect brake for sports shooter and yes in a real CQB environement it would suck. But most people using this kind of brake are sports shooters who don't shoot within a team in an enclosed area.

Put it on a bolt gun and shoot it, then put on a brake like the Heathen and shoot it. You will definitely notice a difference.

I didn't think the APA Lil bastard Gen 2 brake sent any concussion/blast back to the shooter until I shot better designed brakes. Apparently I just didn't know better at the time.

Precision bolt guns and semi-autos are a different game. What's considered a good brake for semi autos doesn't necessarily make it a good brake for a precision bolt gun. The criteria for each is different.

I think we're on the same page here but to be sure: this is for a bolt action with a 24" barrel (Tikka T3X CTR).

I am torn between the Heathen, APA LB and a Area 419 Hellfire. I'm waiting for parts to show up for my build so I will wait for the announcement on the Heathen at Shot Show. Does anyone know if they make different size brakes for smaller contour barrels? I see APA does.

Insite comes in different diameters. The Area 419 doesn't to my knowledge.

I've owned all 3 brakes, and the Heathen is superior over the other two. The APA requires a wrench to tighten, if it comes loose on you during a match and you don't have your wrench on you its not fun. It's also the most obnoxious of the 3. The Area 419 is a nice brake, my biggest gripe is that the sleeve on the brake gets easily carbon locked. Mine is locked up and I haven't gotten it unstuck yet. A shooting buddy of mine had the same issue with the Area 419. I did slice up my fingers pretty good attempting to get it unstuck, the brake ports have extremely sharp edges. I've since gone back to the Heathen.

The Heathen is certainly the most well thought out design of the 3 IMO. People also seem to speak highly of PVA's brakes, but I don't have experience with those.

Bold statement. For "best rated" you sure don't see any of them on rifles in the competition circuit..

Thats a totally different realm and I sure as heck dont have the skills to participate in it! . I rather do CQB and hear bullets fly by me while another shooter are covering fire. At that point no one cares about how loud a brake is :)

I did have a Cadex brake on my CDX30 and that thing was amazing at reducing recoil, but it might also be that the rifle was over 17lbs :)

Different game, different tools.

This might be a slight derail but this thread got me thinking, is there any reason not to run a precision bolt gun type brake on a gasser, in my case a 22" 6.5 Creedmoor Stag 10 build? I've got Heathens, MDT Elite brakes and a couple others on hand, just wondering if I'm overlooking anything? I don't shoot my other gas guns much anymore but my AR just has an A2 flash hider and my M14 has the (in my mind) not greatly designed Springfield Armoury Inc muzzle brake (basically like a radial brake).

Brakes intended for gas guns are typically compensators as well and will have ports on the top. PR brakes typically are ported out the sides only.

Gas gun brakes also generally have more generous bores.

well thought out post and I would agree,
cannot wait for the shot show,

the APA little bugger brake and the area 419 are thought of as great brakes in the USA

and so is the Heathen, would be nice to try all 3 but in looking at tem all the Heathen is the one I will go with in the spring

someone could do a test and the Heathen has been featured on the net a bit but it is a good brake, Jeff

I use the PA-M41 on a 16" Rem 700 in 308, best brake I've tried on that rifle, and no washers required. Any of the rearward directed types would blow a pile of gas in my face with that short of a barrel. Same brake was not very effective on a 26" 7mm mag however.
Best recoil reduction out of any brake I've ever used by a wide margin was the Badger Thruster. It does require a Smith to bore it out to caliber, and I also like to have it timed to the barrel at the same time so no washers required.

Thanks kthomas. I never thought about the area 419 sleeve getting locked on with carbon. I will look into the Heathen after their shot show announcement. Especially if they make a brake for smaller contour barrels.

I'm pretty sure they already make the Heathen in a few sizes so as to fit smaller contours. The new brake sounds interesting though, those guys put a lot of time and effort into designing the Heathen.

Have 5 or six Heathens on precision and auto loaders and they just plain work, accuracy improved in n 3

2x heathens so far. 6.5 and 338. Considering some of the crap brakes like pgw or what have you, I'd make the heathen purchase again. I'm curious of the cadex brakes. Those guys seem to have come along way from those goofy folding grips to short throw bartlein barrel tac drivers.

I also have a blue chip precision brake. It's nice looking and super easy to put on but I haven't tried it yet.
Post a picture of the blue chip it looks like it might work
