Precision gas gun's to bolt guns... school me!

Gents,

I'm currently planning on building a precision bolt gun, that will reach out past 1000 yards accurately. I'm undecided between 6.5 creedmoor, and 6.5x47, but that's not the current issue at hand. The issue is I've never owned a bolt gun in my life.. except for a .22 when I was a kid. I currently have a precision AR build, that shoot's .5-.75moa reliably. I will begin competing this summer with it, but I believe by the end of summer; I'll be officially maxing out my abilities with it.

With that all said, as of today; what are some of the better actions to start with? My expectations are to try and keep the build around 3k$ or less (I know... I know... this will probably grow over time) without glass, and be able to reliably shoot smaller groups.. say .2, .3 moa.

Is there a game you want to join? There may be rules you need to work within.

There is no problem to build a det mag fed repeater to fit your goals AND budget. It could be as simple as a Savage with 10 rds det mags, decent stock right from the factory. Swap in a match prefit and you are well on your way. Some older ones had McMillan or HS stocks for around $1k. Add a prefit for under $600, bed, work up a load and have at it.

heck, there are even some really nice FFP optics options now you can have your ENTIRE rig for around $3k.

Or a Ruger Precision rifle (not my fave but they are popular)... or a Howa in a Chassis... or a Bergara HMR... or a Tikka T3AI... or a ????

Prefer a chassis or particular stock... want certain features in your action that require custom parts and costs ramp up quickly.

Within your budget and with the right compromises, no problem to reach function, performance and accuracy.

For me, barrels is where I will get the best performance vs dollars spent... If you want 1/2 MOA at 1000yds, odds are you are putting on a quality match barrel. Whether gunsmith or prefit, that is a choice with differing costs.

Then the right furniture to make it comfy for me to use.... then trigger.... then optics... then action and complimentary mag system.

Really like my RBROS 6.5X47. Manners T2A, Defiance action, Broughton heavy contour, DE brake, Jewel, NF 8-32X56. I say have fun and collect all the parts you need for a gun EXACTLY LIKE YOU WANT. Any of the big name actions will serve you well. Defiance, Borden, Surgeon, Bat, Stiller etc. Do a search and see which one has the features you like.
 
Im building a 1000m bolt gun (F-open) using a stevens 200 i picked up for 300$ im making a stock for it and bought a prefit select match barrel chambered in 284win, a basix 2 trigger, 20moa mount and rings . Should be good to go as an entry 1000m rifle. All said and done, for the rifle complete ( not the loading supplies) cost me 1400$ without a scope.

The beauty of bolt guns is the simplicity. Fewer moving parts to get to work together gives you unlimited options for keeping a budget intact. Myself even not being a big Remington fan, would go with a mod 700 donor action and piece together from there. Talk to a reputable gunsmith and he will give you a breakdown of all costs and options, and from there aftermarket support ie. Stocks, triggers are to be found everywhere in any configuration you can imagine. Just my .02
 
I like gas guns because I don't have to break my shooting position to cycle the action after every shot (except when putting in a new mag). I think this helps a lot in consistency.

But if you know what you're doing, you will be consistent anyways.
 
I’m getting .2 to .3 MOA out of my elderly Mauser 98 that I paid $340 for. It’s in 6.5x55 and slowed down to creedmoor speed (2710) it is quite sweet shooting. You should have no trouble getting what you’re after.

With a proper bolt rifle set up, you should be able to cycle the rifle without breaking your position. STock fit and action tuning goes a long ways to making this possible.

Maybe a few tweaks are needed in your set up?????

Yes! Good point-absolutely possible! (normally)

My background is in service (as issued) rifles however. We "make" ourselves "fit" the rifles as opposed to altering the rifles to fit us :(

Thats pretty awesome for an old 98. You should shoot 5 groups under .5" and get in the 100m challenge section up top.

That is all too common... but today, there are way more options for furniture so you can pick what works best for you and your shooting style. The barreled actions really don't need to change much but the stock/chassis should fit as well as possible.
