I need to pick up a gun rest, mostly to be used with .22 at 100 yds, but will probably also be used in developing 300wsm loads at 200 yds.

Looked at the Caldwell BR which looks pretty good. Nice features but a bit of a cost.

What are your thoughts?

I use a Caldwell rockchucker Jr for those rifles that don't have a bipod. Used it out to 800m. Relatively inexpensive at WSS.

If the OP found Caldwell a "bit of a cost" I'm sure he'll just enjoy seeing the SEB tag.
Although worth every nickel the SEB is somewhat overkill for his use.
I might suggest a rest that I used for years in the field and on benchtops .
They are called Mike's Bulls Bag.In essence it is a large X shaped filled 4 section sandbag.
The rifle sits in between the top two smaller bags and when the bottom two bags are "spread out" it causes the top two bags to squeeze in on your stock.
I used to use the LARGE version which weighed like 40lbs full of sand.It held the rifle so well that it "ate "recoil as well.
I understand that smaller versions are being made under different names now. These type of rests are inexpensive, effective for basic shooting needs and will last for years of use.
If high tech Bennchrest work is needed then I might suggest a SEB or a Farley, but
inexpensive sandbags will meet basic needs.
Have fun

Front rest and rear rest

I find it interesting to see what shooters are using for rifle rests. I see a lot of very expensive rifles being set over sand bags, and the shooter ends the day not being very happy about how his rifle performed. In short, if you want accuracy buy yourself a good quality front rest and rear rest.

I agree with ONT0001. I have a few bags that I got from a fella that reloads shotgun ammo. They come on bulk shot and they are perfect when filled with sand. Simple is good. O yea, cheap too!

Just picked up a Caldwell Rock BR and I think it will do the trick. Wasn't planning on spending that much but after playing with it for a bit I had to have it. Also picked up a medium rear bag. Once I got home I put my Savage BTVLSS in it and tightened the front bag with those "ears" and wow. My rifle wasn't moving. Love all the adjustments. Very impressed and I think it will be worth every penny.

Thanks for everyones input!
