Here's a precision bean field smokeless muzzle loader. Pics suck but you get the idea. We'll be testing this out during the next few weeks so if this is interesting to you just stay tuned. Sabotless. Bullets are sized to the barrel. Supposed to be good for 400 yds. That big buck ain't safe!! We'll see. Specs:

Pierce singleshot action
Kreiger 24" 1-20 twist .45 cal barrel
McMillan A1-3 stock
Jewel trigger
Surprise breech plug

Below is a brass that has been cut down presses onto the breech plug to make a tight seal, no blowback.

Cool! But I must ask, why the slow twist? The long range muzzle loader crowd shoots to 1000 yards and uses similar twists to those of us in the BPCR crowd, namely 1:18 or 1:16 usually.

What sorta bullets do you plan on shooting?

Chris.

You'll have fun explaining that rifle to the CO's :)

Doesn't a muzzle loader have to have a Fixed and sealed (permanent) breech?

I assume you have to 'load' a primed case into the 'breech', THEN load the rifle?

Or am I totally not understanding the case that is in the pic?

Jerry

It has a breech plug like any inline muzzle loader that screws out. You load powder, wonder wad and bullet from muzzle and then just load a primer ( that's in the case ) and close bolt. The case only has a small rifle primer in it that's pushed against the breech plug that has a small hole through it to ignite the powder. Nothing new here.

My mistake. It's a 20 twist. This is what a builder down south uses exclusively and he recommended that. He's having great success. 250 gr. bullets.

Ah, that makes sense. With that 20 twist you ought to be able to launch something in the 500gr range to a lot further than 300 yards with plenty of accuracy. Mind you, maybe not good for hunting past 300 yards though :D

A cool project for sure.

Chris.

Interesting. What's it weigh? What do you have in mind for a charge? Will you start with something like the 10MLII and use N110, 4759 or something along those lines?

I think you should hang the ram rod. Part of the charm of a muzzleloader is it's appearance and the ram rod's part of that.

My 2 cents anyway...

Reason is the muzzle loader only season in Ontario. There are alot of farms and field hunting here that realy limits you to lets say 200 yds max with something in a conventional muzzle loader. This is to reach out but you still have to know what you are doing same as all long range hunting.
This wasn't a because he can project. There is a reason and that's what started this. It is also clean like a high power and not the black powder mess.

I have been doing a lot of research on custom LR muzzleloaders. The one that comes to mind Bad Bull, I would love a muzzleloader like yours.

Will this use a saboted bullet? If so, what type of sabot will handle the pressures and velocities we are considering here?
This is the main limitation in the modern smokeless muzzle loader.
To me the only solution will be to force a jacketed bullet into the rifling and down the bore.
Some sort of lever at the muzzle to start the bullet???
Just a thought

No sabots. We make a die specific to each barrel we push the bullet through to size it so that it take approx 8 lbs of pressure to push down the muzzle biting into the rifling. Easy to push 8lbs. I do more than that on a dirty blackpowder with sabots sometimes.

I converted my Rem 700ML .50 bolt to a shellholder style to use 209 primers. Works much better than the Remington factory conversion. No primer fouling outside of breech. Still using the original Remington BP barrel with sabots and pellets.

I'm thinking of converting to smokeless, sabotless like JW has. The pistol shell casing, small primer conversion is even a step further for better accuracy in muzzleloaders. Sub MOA is attainable.
Nice setup there JW.

How do you plan on ensuring the 8 pounds of load pressure.
Smokeless powders are pressure sensitive and consistent velocity will rely on this.
This is another issue with modern smokeless powder muzzle loaders that use sabots.
