I ended up got a .308 SPS Tact. on a whim...thought it was a good deal...even though I couldn't afford it. Than since no point of having the gun and not being able to shoot it I though what the hell might as well get a scope, bipod, rings and bases....so for a gun I would've got for $599 on Christmas I ended up paying $1500 to get it set up!!! I've never spend that much on a 'gun' before and I'm not even a rifle guy!! lol WTF? I guess if the zombies ever attack I'll have a nice long range tool :)

Wanted to see what was the fuss about ARs and ended up with 6 000$ less in my account : 3400$ LMT , 1800$ NF , 500$ Larue mount and vertical grip , 250$ Magpull Miad & CTR , 300$ Pmags , 2K of winchester whitebox 1000$ , 1k of PMC 600$ . Realising u spent more then what u origininally thought , PRICELESS .

$1500 to me yes that's a lot...I know people spend a couple grand on just a scope but I don't make 100K+ a year and there are a lot of other things I probably should've spent my money on instead.

you convice yourself that $800 isn't too bad, than you end up spemding twice as much  aaaand I still need a case for it as well as dies and other reloading supplies :S

Some of my scopes...
N/F 42X NXS - $2400
N/F 42X BR - $1800
Swarovski 10X - $2000
and so on, and so on, and so on.

The origional response was not so much towards the money but the fact that you thought you got suckered...

I'm gonna need to get a job soon, laff

I think you spent lots. For my precision rig I bought a Stevens 200 (223) and equipped it with an Elite 4200 4x16. Now heres the clever part. To save money if anyone tries to tell me its not a precision rig I put my fingers in my ears and shout LA LA LA LA LA ALA. :D

Congrats.. you want a trophy or a cookie for having all those high priced items.

The guy stated he bought what he couldnt afford and felt "suckered."

Whether it was 100.00 or 1000.00, get off your "high money ladened" horse...

IM, I know how you feel. It always starts with the gun and just balloons from there. Seems all my guns start as base stock guns and end up totally custom and costing way to much.

Wait until you really get "the disease". You find an old rifle stock, so you decide to get a cheap action to put into it...then of course, you have to get a sling, and scope. Now, of course the scope requires bases, rings, scope covers..

Or if you really have it bad, you find a spare magazine for a gun you long ago sold. Then you just have to buy a gun to go with the magazine. Heavens, I would NEVER consider just selling the magazine...

Your problem is that you took a credit card into a gun store. Never a good idea, at least lock it in the car so you have an excuse to get out of the store and breath some real air, the air in the gunstore is filled with bad ethers...you always walk out with what you had not planned to get.

Congrat's on the gun, long distance shooting is fun and addictive. Hope to see you out with the ORA some day soon ;)

LR precision shooting is my favorite ADDICTION and it can get pricey.

However, being able to plink at a pop can at 500yds or a 2L pop bottle sized stump at 1035yds is a whole lot of fun.

For me, it's about bang for the buck. There is quite alot of stuff that is moderately priced that offer great performance. Spending as much as 4 times more may offer a benefit but usually quite small and for the average shooters, not noticeable.

Sometimes, spending less actually gets you more.

If you can, bed the rifle, lighten the trigger pull and go have some fun. If you find that this is your thing but shooting cost is getting pricey, consider the 223. Same ballistics, accuracy for 1/2 the cost and 1/3 the recoil.

I now shoot my 223 4 times more often then my 6.5's and my boomers have been moth balled/sold. 50 223's vs 15 300 RUM's.

That is a lot of bang for the buck... Enjoy your new toy.

Merllin, I don't want your trophys or your cookies, i've got my own and my "high priced" goodies I have I bought because I only have to buy them once so I save money.
If Lugger bought a beat up old hunting rifle that might hit one min. of moose for $1500 then there's a good chance he got suckered. If he bought a "precision" rifle that,ll shoot 1/4 - 1/2 " groups at 100 then he got a damn good deal. From what he's described he's got a good start on a nice shooting rifle and easily got his money's worth.

And Merllin I don't know what you shoot or where but to most people that shoot "precision" guns the word "precision" denotes being able to produce and sustain a higher level of accuracy than is usually available from $1500 guns or hunting set ups.
That kind of accuracy is not cheap.

And incase you havn't noticed even a tank of gas now adays is $100, now that's suckered.

My origional response was not intended as an insult towards him and i'm sure he didn't take it that way or he would have complained so mind your business genius.

And btw, you spelled your damn name wrong.

M.

He told us what he bought... Read any forum on the internet and you will find the accuracy of factory Remingtons. Some are tack drivers, others are not.

Precision for me is Sub-MOA at 100 yards, and I know its not cheap. I have $2500 into my precision rifle, hell its on the EE if you wanna take a peak at it.

Anyone who asks someone if "they don't get out much," when they buy a new toy, that's a douchebag move. Especially on someone who is trying to get into the long range sport. Pull your head out of your ass.

You want to help the guy, read posts from Obtunded and Mystic, if anyone on this forum is coaching guys with USEFUL information, its those two guys.

Get a notepad, seems you will need to write a lot of stuff down.

Merllin, I'm not gonna argue with you here you obviously don't get it but the comment was not directed at him buying what he did, it was directed at the fact he thought that was alot for a precision set up.
And I've already offered to help the guy. Again mind your business, you don't understand.

I remember a t-shirt with good advice, " Never argure with a fool, people watching might not know who the fool is" I'll quit argueing with you.

Oh.. Oh.. Backpedal.. Backpedal... Dont trip on the way out...

Anyways IM, Post some pictures of your rig when you get a chance and lets see what you spend your money on. Always interesting to see what combination's people have come up with.

Some of us cant afford kahles and NF and Swaro optics. Some of us cant afford PGW and AI and Sako. Thats a lot of money to dump into a sport right off the cuff. If you just got into hockey, you wouldnt spend 300$ on your first stick would you?? probably not. Youd more then likely ask one of your friends to use one of theirs. Point being. For a first *precision* setup, i think hes on the right track. After all, everyones definition of *precision* differs.

And if he really gets the bug, the spending really starts, laff.
We use decent Savage rifles and 10X bushnells for trainers and the shoots are at 300yds. These are fine rifles and more than do the job for the purpose. Investment on each is probably around $1100-1200 each.

I bought my first centerfire and after getting it set up I had spent up $1000 or so. That was tough at the time. But shoot it and enjoy what you have. As time goes by you will spend more. Another good start would be to check into reloading. I just started myself and while I couldnt do it before I am happy I have done so.

here's my toy :)
