Fellow Gunnutz, I am looking at two precision rifles perhaps for purchase and need opinions:
HS Precision FBI Tactical in .308 comes complete with all accessories, bi-pod,cleaning kit, hard case,tactical scope rings,adjustable cheek piece,so on and so on. $4800.00 + tax

Sako TRG - 42 in .300 WIN Mag comes with muzzle brake and all other stuff extra. $4500.00 tax in.
1. Is this the price you pay for precision and long range ?
2. Are they worth the bucks ?:sniper:
 
Myself personally

I feel they are not worth it.

You can have a FULL BLOWN custom built for that money and less. In my books those rifles are not customs.

You can have one built on a Stiller action with a Robertson Tactical stock, Jewell trigger,and your choice of bases and rings for less.

My thoughts.
 
They're all good rifles. I had the same project and decided to go the canadian route with a PGW Coyote in 308.

Made right here and no need for any kind of import/export permit if you ever need replacement parts. They will take care of you.

Like is has already been said you can get a custom rifle built for less. That way you get to choose the caliber, barrel, barrel length, action, stock etc, not what the manufacturer chooses to put together.
 
Thanks do you have the web site for PGW or any additional info on price and options ?
 
I'm not convinced that you can build a comparable full custom for less than that kind money. I know people will disagree but a Rem 700 action and a TRG 42 action are very different. After the cost of all of the components and what you pay to have it all put together you save nothing. This has been my experience in having builds done as well as various gunsmithing.

BTW I also own a TRG 21 in .308 as well as a TRG 42 in .338 Lapua and my customs shoot as well but not better.

Tough decision! You can build what you want for less but it might turn out to be a lot less accurate! I tend to feel that if you buy from one of the big names like HS that offer you a guarantee and a test target you will be better served.
 
All is needed here, is proper perspective. Big bucks does not guarantee performance. For instance, I bought single shot, 308 Win Sportco 44, left hand bolt, 27" Shults & Larsen 12" twist barrel, everything oryginal, for $425 about 12 years ago.For 12x40mm AO steel tube Weaver, I paid $225. I will shoot 1 1/4" at 300 yards, with my special handloads, on a good day. I have seen, quite a few fellows, with fancy rigs, with opticks alone, worth 3 time as much, as my combo, not being able to get even near that score. So, in short, before you jump into deep water, investigate first, look around, for better value.

They make great rifles and George is a super guy, always willing to share advice.

Unfortunately, like many builders and smaller companies in the US, they don't export. Its just getting to be to much of a pain, and the cost is going sky high (I'm sure your second rifle wasn't near as easy to get into Canada). Very nice by the way:cool:

If your looking to build, I would suggest you talk with one of the talented builders in Canada (there are several).
 
I agree with you Blackcloud.
Importing a rifle into Canada is no longer worth it IMO. I see it this way. You spend 5000$ on something you might never even get to shoot. That is a fact, i'm talking from experience. In the US now, a smith , the manufacturer, needs to have his own export licence. It also mean that he needs to be putting serial #'s on his rifles. Most don't, action makers put serial#'s on their actions but aren't the fabricators of the complete rifle. Thus creates a problem during import.

If you have 4500$ burning a hole in your pocket for a rifle. I'm shure you can get a Canadian smith to build you something nice. I ordered 2 barrels from Rob Mclennan two weeks ago because he makes world class stuff. I got Spencer to build the rifle because I have a good relationship with him. Or else, I would never have done it.

I can't say as I have heard any complaints about any custom rifles.

Would suggest e-mailing/phoning some rifle builders and talk with them about what you want. Compare the prices and decide what you want to do.

of that from one of the quality gunsmiths on this forum is HIGHLY unlikely.
 
For the price of either one of those rifles, you could have a custom rifle built and have enough money left over to buy a high-end scope.

They are nice rifles, but if you judge them by their results, they are more money than you need to spend.

if you get a custom built by a local smith not only have you made a new friend but you also can guarentee he will do anything to help fix any problems that might occur with the gun as for his name is on the product and in the world of gunsmithing word of mouth is everything. when you buy a OFF THE SHELVE semi custom like a hs precision you are buying somthing from somone you will probobly never meet or talk to. if there is a problem with the gun the best you can hope for is the store you bought it from will send it to the factory and you might see it again in six months. i personally would have a local smith build me a gun then buy one that comes with a target that you cant even be sure was shot with the gun u bought. my 2 cents
 
Ian Robertson has a sale on Barnard actions right now for around 1K. add another 1K for a super duper Robertson stock and a barrel of your choice and caliber for $500-600 fitted and chambered. So you are looking at around $2600. That leaves you about $2200 from your $4800 you were going to spend on an off the shelf rifle. I am sure for $2200 you can find a good scope, mounts, case, bipod and cleaning kit.
 
Not having had a big boomer built by a gunsmith but speaking from experience with small calibre stuff. A custom built is far more likely to perform better than even a semi-custom factory job(ie Sako or FN). There is lots of evidence on the various threads in this forum to support that.
You're also less likely to dispose of a custom as readily as an off-the-shelf item; you create a long term attachment for a custom.
 
I have a custom Remington with a Mike Rock 22" M24 contour bedded in an A-5 and 2 H-S Precision rifles. I like the McMillan stock as it's more comfortable however it doesn't shoot any better than the H-S Precision guns. All 3 outshoot me by a long shot. The custom cost me more than either of the H-S guns.
