I bought Vortex Precision and MDT Elite rings for my two new rifles. My buddy is balking at buying the MDTs because they are aluminum. Does anyone know of or use steel precision rings. Cheers

I'm running TPS steel rings.

These (TSR version) if he wants steel with a target look, also Murphy Precision makes steel and titanium rings, Warne makes some in steel.
7075 rings vs steel nobody would know the difference, they will perform the same.

I think when you are are talking one or two screw, 1/2” wide, thin profile rings on a typical hunting rifle you could surely make a case for steel, but when you are talking thicker profile 4-6 screw, probably 34mm, typical precision rings I don’t see the need and I’m not sure anyone else does either because most(all?) of the high end, very well regarded rings and mounts are aluminum. The exception might be on a big boomer large caliber magnum ELR setup... even then I don’t think it’s necessary but some might see the extra strength as a benefit.

Like others have said, aluminium is perfectly fine for the application, most high end manufacturers (Badger Ordnance, Leupold, Nightforce, MDT, Spuhr, etc) use it for their rings/unimounts. All you have to gain by using steel rings is weight. I have MDT rings on numerous rifles that have seen thousands of rounds and zero issues.
