Precision tactical BA rifle - Custom Rem 700 vs Savage 10 Stealth vs. Ruger Precision

Hi folks,

I have a $1800 budget for my first BA rifle. It will be used for target shooting only, and one of my few requirements is that I want with a tactical chassi. I already have a scope (Vortex Viper HS 6-24X50mm), and was unsure which path to go:

-Custom Rem 700 (is this one a good deal? https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1677615-Custom-Rem700-308-Trued-*price-drop*)
-Savage 10 Stealth
-Ruger Precision

The Savage is the cheapest so I could save the money and upgrade it in the future if needed.

Suggestions?
 
I have 2 savage 10 series rifles both in Cadex chassis, and one RPR, love all 3. While you didn't mention calibre I'm gonna take a guess at 308, or 6.5 creedmoor.

If 308 is the calibre, I would look at a Savage 10 TR and toss it in Cadex or MDT chassis. Sell off the Accustock and the mag for what you can get and you have a better rifle than the stealth, and probably as good or better than the Ruger. The Rem 700, is a beauty action with tons of parts so the sky is the limit, but to get the same accuracy once you have the action blueprinted and put it in a chassis you price will most likely be higher than you want.


My 10tr shoots a ragged hole at 100 yards with handloads and is about a 1/2-3/4 MOA gun at 500. I'm wirking on going out farther this year.
The Rem you have pictured is a nice rifle, I'm personally not a fan of that chassis but if you like it, fill you boots. Best of luck in your search.
 
It is a little above your price range but I think you would end up with something a lot better if you just got the Tikka Tac A1 in 6.5 creedmoor of the EE.

Comes with a chassis, good mags (Sako TRG/Tikka CTR mags actually feed great - better than AICS IMO), a good to stage trigger, and very good accuracy according to all reports.
 
I don't know much about the Rem 700 but I have a gen 2 Ruger Precision in 6.5 Creed and it was a toss up between it and the Savage Stealth

In the end I got a good deal on a very lightly used Ruger so thats the direction I went but they are all good bets

I handled the Ruger and Savage and they are very different guns in my opinion. The Ruger is heavy and pretty much bench rest only where the Savage is light and could make a good hunting gun too if thats a consideration at all.

The Savage is factory blueprinted so thats a plus. The Ruger comes with a muzzle brake so if thats something you want remember it'll be an extra expense with the Savage which doesn't come with one.

There are varying reports regarding the magazines the Ruger come with - some people have had good experiences and some quite the opposite. I use PMAGs which work very well so I couldn't comment.

Both are good looking guns but I`d have to say the Ruger is the more "Tactical".

I find the stock butt stock on the Ruger awkward to adjust but to me the butt stock on the Savage felt cheap. I personally would have swapped/upgraded it if I`d gone the Savage route.

Regarding the Rem 700, I know people who are experienced precision shooters and they speak very highly of the Rem. One of my friends took this advice and bought a sorted Rem which he is very happy with.
 
I'm partial to Rem 700s myself but any one of those 3 will serve you well as long as you figure out what you're looking to accomplish in the first place. How far would you like to shoot, what style of shooting, do you reload. All those play a part in determining what you need in a rifle. I would however steer clear of a shorter barrelled rifle like that 700 that you posted the ad for unless you are set on something more "handy" or lightweight. You just give up so much in terms of velocity with a short barrel like that (18"), especially in a .308.
