Hello im looking into having a precision rifle built but can not decide on caliber.
I shoot 308 now in a remington 700 SS 5R milspec in an AICS stock.
i like the 308 but would like to switch for less recoil and faster follow up shots and better wind ducking.

My new rifle will be a tactical style rifle with a Mcmillan A5 stock, Remington action, Jewel trigger, Kreiger heavy BBL.

I have narrowed it down to 5 calibers.
Rifle will be used primarily within 300 yards but would like the ability to take it out to 1000 if needed.

6mmBR will get to 1000 but I would load specifically for 300 and then different rounds for 1000. I think the smith and projectile are the top two factors in accuracy. Hype and fun is why people choose different calibers. I built a 6mmDasher for F class, Stevens, RB Sav2 trigger, Gaillard, Stockade, Harris. We shoot 300, 500, and 600 on Saturdays but I went Dasher and use Berger 108's. Saving for a Nightforce.

Cheers

Although I love the 6BR and rave about its capabilities out beyond 1000, it does not feed well from magazines.

For less recoil, good barrel life, over-all accuracy and availablity of superb components, I'd look at the 6.5X47 Lapua. Give some serious thought to the 6.5X55 too. It will do everything you want.

260Rem is my first choice if more long then short.
243 if more short then long. The 260 will have longer barrel life but more recoil.

22/250 with a fast twist pushing 80gr Amax is another fun option.

Personally, a 223 with a 9 twist barrel pushing 75gr Amax will do all you want.

Assuming a short action is used then the nod would go to the 260 Rem, the 6.5's are hard to beat balistically. My 223 with a 1:8 twist in a 30" barrrel does what you want but it gets blown around in the wind pretty good. Your ability to read the wind will determine if you like the 223 but it is the most fun to shoot against the big boys and the cheapest to load for. :D

Recoil is based on the weight of the gun so make the gun 15-17lbs with scope and ammo and none of the calibers your looking at are going to move much. Aside from that, throw a muzzle break on it and calm everything down all together.
