Predator Hunting and Calls

Hey all, First year getting into predator hunting (mostly coyotes) here in Quebec and was looking for some input on calls. I bought a primos turbo dog and it was broken out of the box so i returned it and am now looking at FoxPro. The patriot catches my eye due to price and the fact its light weight, speaking with the sales rep he said most people outgrow it fast and end up buying the hammer jack. Anyone have any experience with the two calls? I feel like the patriot would serve my needs and allow me to do snowshoe/camping and hunting a litle better but has someone got and coyotes with it? is it loud enough? or should I pony up and pay the extra for the hammer jack?

Imo start out with hand calls. One howler( open reed) one distress( closed reed) they work great, fit in a shirt pocket are plenty loud, never run out of batteries, are cost effective....ect. Once you have hammered a few you'll be able to make an educated decision on which e caller is best for you. Unless you realize you don't need one at all lol. Welcome to predator hunting. Careful....it will become an obsession.��
 
My suggestion is to buy a Sceery AP-2 cottontail distress hand call. It is cheap, loud, and you can make lots of different sounds with it. I've used it successfully for foxes, coyotes, wolves and bears.
 
Patriot would be fine. When calling with electronic calls, batteries and sounds are important along with a loud speaker. Volume helps big time which also works with some of the sounds. Also make sure you have hand calls as well because you will need them when you dont expect it.
 
Hmm good advice, I was worried id have more chance to mess it up with a hand call, but I guess its how you learn. I know we got plenty of coyotes out back, see em on the camera all the time so looking forward to giving this a shot!
 
I bought a primos lil dog reed call. Seems like it can make a bunch of different sounds with different mouth positions. Fawn bleat, squeaking rodent and an injured dog whimper whine. I also have a primos double cottontail call. Very loud sscreeching rabbit dying noise.
I’m going to get into predator hunting this winter too, those are the two hand calls I have selected.
 
Anyone have any experience with the MFK calls from the states? was looking at the price of having their starter pack shipped here and it would be about the same as anything i could get locally. I've herd good things about them.
 
Mfk are great calls Tory is a master. I have a switched to diaphragm calls for both coyote vocals and distress but they do take some practice. Open /close reeds are much simpler and are very effective. I do have a fox pro but mostly stick to hand calls. Fox pro, lucky duck , iotech are three reputable brands for e callers.

Another vote for hand calls before you spend money on electronic devices. Hand calls are portable, don't need batteries, and I have no doubt they work as well as electronics. The only advantage electronics have is that you can place them somewhere that you aren't and divert attention, but good hunting techniques (and maybe a partner, which we like to do because it's more fun with friends) can make that problem very minor. We walk lots, and we are lazy enough that carrying stuff through knee deep snow just isn't fun. You can have a few calls in pockets that weigh nothing, work just fine, and not spend a lot until you find out whether predator hunting is really what you want to do. I want to be clear that we (I and my hunting partners) actually own 3 electronic calls, but we seldom bother with them any more because we believe they don't attract coyotes any better than mouth blown calls.

I have had great success with both the fox pro and Johnny Stuart Diaphragm calls sold through Amazon. J S also has a wolf howler and rabbit distress on Amazon that I use as well. Also primos randy anderson set works ( they don't fit my mouth perfect) and rocky mountain calls also has a few predator calls. I have a purple one by them .... MFK calls are the bomb but there are other options available
 
For sure, I'm just looking at what's available locally.....Starting price 19.99, very poor selection. amazon ranges from 20-30$. 10.99-12.99 for the MFK calls plus shipping to Canada, seems to be the best option for the price. I should mention that ill pick up some turkey calls and other stuff from them so its not like I'm paying to ship one call.
 
I have a lot of different coyote calls.
The calls I always carry are a Sceery AP-5 snowshoe hare, two howlers from E.L.K. Inc., and a rubber bulb mouse squeaker.
The power howler for distance howling and the yote howler for making dog in distress sounds and a higher pitched howl.
I glue a small piece of velcro to the bottom of the squeaker and forearm of the rifle so I can temp attach the squeaker if I see a dog coming and it keeps holding up.
Can be pointing the rifle at the dog and giving the squeaker a few compresses keeping my movement to a minimum.
 
Hand calls are the mainstay but for an electronic we use waterproof Ultimate Ears Boom II bluetooth speakers along with one of the many predator calling apps available for iphone. Using a calling app and whatever bluetooth speaker is a good low cost alternative before committing to buying an electronic calling system. You can always use the bluetooth speakers for music or for whatever else as well. You can join the Boom speakers together using the Boom app and expand your sound which is very efficient especially when you are using a low volume setting

Great tip. I have also messed around with Bluetooth speakers and apps. They work well and usually cost less than a dedicated caller.
 
I have an Icotec for electronic. Its programmable so you can add or remove calls. Works very well. Option to control a spinner decoy from the remote.

For a hand call, try the Dollar Store for a squeaky dog toy....works great! You can even zip tie it to the front stock of your rifle, so when you are up on target, give it a squeeze

By the fck do they work a treat. Just as you say, grip it in your hand
On the stock.
I found it worked excellent in cut lines as it isn’t very loud
