For .223 and .308 ? I'm thinking Varget for the .308 but would appreciate opinions and i'm not sure for .223 .

For .308 Varget rocks. In my bolt gun I use 46 grains Varget behind a 155 smk bullet. Shoots as good as 1/3 MOA. Worst groups are still under 1 MOA.

Varget is the "heat" for .223 with heavier (longer) bullets. I use 24 grains of varget behind a 77 SMK bullet. Shoots great in my 1/7 AR. Bucks the wind great!

Varget will work in .223 with lighter bullets. My personal preference with the lighter bullets and .223 is H335. I use 25 grains of H335 with a 52 grain SMK for my plinking rounds. VERY accurate out to 200 yards. After that the wind has it's way with it.

Also H335 meters like water. You don't have to weigh each charge once you have the powder dispenser set. BIG time saver.

For me Varget is the 2nd best for both calibres. I use reloder 15 for best results in my 308, and also use H335 in my 223. Varget is next best for each.

Varget is excellent for .308. H335 was designed mainly for the .223 and is great for that caliber.
A number of people are having very good success with Varget in both calibers.

Thanks guys . I haven't reloaded .223 or .308 in about 20 years as i have been shooting the cheap stuff but the cheap stuff is getting expensive . I reload a lot of handgun ammo.

Varget works best for 308.

For 223, H4198 shoots best with 55 gr bullets. I can't find any powder that would work well with 60 gr or heavier bullets with my guns. I am getting 5/8 MOA 5 shots with H4198 and have no incentive to try other powders.

Varget and RE15 both work well in both calibers.

If you use any ball pistol powder I urge you to avoid buying any ball rifle powder. If you own both it just a question of time before Murphy empties your pistol powder into the rifle powder can....

I use varget for both, for .308 it is fantastic.

For .223 I use 77gn SMK's, and have done load workup using , H335, Varget, and N540. After ~ 100 test loads I found very little difference.

When I switched to 73gn Berger VLD's I found a very slight benefit for N540.

When I was using 75gn Amax bullets, I found that the loads were a bit compressed with varget, solved that with a longer drop tube.

I just use varget for both now

once more varget works great in .308 and .223 as well as most all the small bores..nice and clean burning and pressure/velocity is pretty dam consistant no matter the weather..had some luck with it in the 30-06 as well..(rem 700 ok...750 not so good:()...there are a lot of good powders out there for these cals ..experiment a little and see what works best for you and your toys

Too many to list, try some of the suggestions. For a dual purpose powder if that satisfies your accuracy needs, Varget & W748. I use AA2520 in my 308 and 748 in 223.
bigbull

From personal experience:

H335 for light to medium bullets in .223 (up to 60g)
Win 748 for medium weight bullets in .223 (50-55g)
and .308 (168g)
Varget for heavy bullets in .223 (69-80g), I haven't tried in on the .308 yet.
